Methodist Le Bonheur Healthcare is happy to take care of sick people. Founded in 1918 by John Sherard, the not-for-profit health care system serves the Memphis area with seven hospitals; multiple minor medical, surgical, and diagnostic health centers; and home health agencies. The system has more than 1,700 beds. In addition to traditional health services, – more... Methodist Healthcare offers extended care services, sleep disorder centers, and physical therapy. It also operates physician practices and a physician referral service. The system's flagship hospital, Methodist University Hospital has about 700 beds and is a teaching hospital affiliated with the University of Tennessee Health Science Center.
Operations
Along with the University of Tennessee, Methodist Healthcare is affiliated with a number of organizations throughout the state including the University of Memphis, The Medical Education and Research Institute, and Health Choice (the exclusive managed care provider for the system in Memphis and the Mid-South).
Strategy
Methodist Healthcare in 2011 acquired Penn Marc Internal Medicine, a small physician practice in Memphis, in order to expand its reach throughout the community. Some of Methodist Healthcare's other physician office purchases have included Foundation Medical Group, Lakeland Family Medicine, McGee General Surgery Clinic, Sutherland Cardiology Clinic, and The CardioVascular Center.
In 2012 Methodist Healthcare partnered with BlueShield of Tennessee in a five-year arrangement that enhanced its new care and payment models. It also opened a Methodist Healthcare Comprehensive Sickle Cell Center as an expansion strategy to provide better service to patients. – less
