Michaels is the worst place I have ever worked. There is blatant age discrimination and favoritism. There is also unpaid wages and unlawful practices. If you want to succeed at Michaels you better be under 30 and in with the right crowd.

I worked for Michael's for over five years. It is a very poorly run company on all levels from corporate to district to store levels. The turn over rate for managers is very high. I'm surprised they are hiring from the outside usually they transfer people in from other Michael's stores who are involved in their management training program. In the five years I was there there were five managers, only one good the rest terminated. Harrasment, discrimination, failing to pay wages, unlawful work practices, etc. are just a few of their problems. It's fun and creative enviroment to shop but if your an employee you better grow a thick skin and watch your back.

Every business has it's own style. What is the office environment and culture like at Michaels?
Are people dressed in business casual, jeans and t-shirts, or full-on suits? Do folks get together for Friday happy hours and friendly get-togethers?
What is a typical day in the life of an employee at Michaels?

I had a phone interview for this HR position 2 weeks ago. I was qualified for the position but I guess she didn't like my voice. She told me she'd call me back during the week of Sept 4th and I never heard from her again either way. I believe the phone interviews are really to find out if they can guess your race before coming in for an interview.

Do you work at Michaels? How did you find the job? How did you get that first interview?
Any advice for someone trying to get in?

I worked at the Port Richey store for two years. I had to drive 26 miles one way to work only to be sent home after only working two hours because the store didn't make their sales. This was and is a constant on going problem so if you don't mind showing up for work only to be sent home this is the job for you. Management shows undue favoritism to their friends/employees who do alot of goofing off which makes more work for you. Presently I have applied for unemployment and am filling a complaint with the EEOC.
