About midway between Boston and Worcester in eastern Massachusetts is where you'll find the more than 30 branches of Middlesex Savings Bank. The mutually owned, community-oriented financial institution provides such traditional products and services as checking and savings accounts, IRAs, and certificates of deposit. Its lending activities are focused on residential and commercial mortgages; the bank also has five offices devoted to business lending, including Small Business Administration loans. Its Middlesex Financial Group subsidiary provides retail investment services through an agreement with UVEST Financial Services, a division of LPL Financial.
In 2009 the bank bought Service Bancorp and its Strata Bank subsidiary. As part of the deal, Middlesex Savings Bank formed a mutual holding company, Middlesex Bancorp, MHC, that owns the merged bank.
Middlesex Savings Bank was formed when Middlesex Institution for Savings (dating back to 1835) and Natick Five Cents Savings Bank (which opened in 1859) joined forces in 1982. – less
