Life can be great in this agency depending on the level where you work. The upper management is vicious and nasty. The field work is honest work and the mine operators of today are much better than even ten years ago. If you go to work here, keep your head down, do what is asked of you and be careful of getting too ambitious. At the GS 13 level it starts to get fairly miserable.
The hiring freeze has everyone working more hours than we turn in but that is nothing new if you are qualified to get a job here. The work is satisfying in that you are tasked with inspections and reports that help keep miners safe. I was displaced during a closure but was fairly accommodated.
