Longtime retailer Henry Modell & Company sells sporting goods, fitness equipment, apparel, and brand-name athletic footwear as America's oldest family-owned and -operated sporting goods retailer. Established in 1889, it also ensures it has local team apparel on hand. Through 150-plus stores that operate under the Modell's Sporting Goods banner, the company serves more than 10 East Coast states and the District of Columbia. Known for its reasonably priced branded products, Modell's locates its stores in malls, regional shopping centers, and busy urban areas. It also boasts an online presence at Modells.com. The retail chain is run by the fourth generation of Modell management.
Henry Modell & Company operates its business in nearly a dozen US states. It has a retail presence in New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, and the District of Columbia.
To ensure it has all its bases covered, Henry Modell & Company offers licensed products from nearly 30 sports leagues. Also, during recent years Henry Modell & Company has focused on designing more appealing and accessible stores. To this end, most Modell's locations have been renovated to provide improved accommodations for shoppers. Also, the retailer opened three stores in New York City, including its redesigned 20,000-sq.-ft. flagship store in Times Square. Renovations come at a price, however. When Modell's kicked off renovations in 2010, the company reported revenues of $567 million that year, 10% lower than 2009.
