About Morristown Memorial Hospital

Got a gash in the Garden State? Atlantic Health System has more than 1,300 beds for you to get better in. The not-for-profit Atlantic Health System (AHS) operates three acute care hospital providing general medical and surgical services to residents of northern New Jersey. Its flagship Morristown Medical Center serves as a regional trauma center and – more... provides specialty care in a number of areas, including oncology, pediatrics, and cardiac care. The system's Overlook Medical Center houses the Atlantic Neuroscience Institute; home to the Comprehensive Stroke Center. Its smaller Newton Medical Center serves patients in two New Jersey counties as well as counties in Pennsylvania and New York.

The system's corporate health division provides employee assistance programs, as well as a full range of corporate-related medical services including physicals, smoking cessation, work injury, and travel medicine services. Its corporate clients include pharmaceutical companies, manufacturing operations, and municipal governments.

In addition to its hospitals, AHS operates home care and hospice units that serve Essex, Morris, Somerset, and Union counties. It also serves as the official health care provider for the New York Jets football team, which has named its corporate headquarters and training facility the Atlantic Health Jets Training Center.

AHS provides educational that includes continuing medical education classes and residency programs in pharmacy and nursing to keep its medical staff current on medical technologies and techniques. Annually the  hospital system teaches more than 250 medical residents through about a dozen residency programs in emergency and family medicine, surgery, and pediatrics, among others. It is affiliated with Mount Sinai School of Medicine and the Mount Sinai Hospital, giving AHS access to the major university hospital's resources.

AHS became a three-hospital system in early 2011 when Newton Medical Center, then known as Newton Memorial Hospital, moved under the AHS umbrella. The deal expanded access to outpatient and preventative care throughout the region, increased specialty care options, and allowed for the improvement of facilities at the Newton campus.

In 2012 AHS moved to grow even larger when it agreed to acquire Chilton Memorial Hospital. The purchase will add a northern New Jersey medical center with 260 beds, plus related outpatient clinics.

The company also held talks over a possible affiliation with Barnabas Health during 2011; however, after two years of discussions, the two providers decided to part ways without reaching a partnership agreement. – less
