I worked with MVDS for about 6 years, starting as a volunteer and working my way up into a residential manager position. In my time, I experienced a great amount of education, relationship building, and loss of respect for the company, overall. The most enjoyable part of the job was making the lives of the residents a life that they want- a life that they deserve to have the same opportunities to build as anyone else. However; this does not happen with MVDS- the idea that a nonprofit company revolves totally around dollar signs is way above my head- as had been explained my many of my upper management team. While there, I experienced several occasions where a staff or often a residents desires were literally put aside for the idea of the company saving money. People were told that visiting family was 'not the best use of their money'. I did not appreciate that when it was brought up, the returned statement was less than solution based. 'You are trying to make an us vs. them atmosphere and it needs to stop or there will be disciplinary action' when in reality, rights were being abused, employees were not being fully informed on changes to be made to our pay, our overtime pay, the options the company had, nor the laws that were changing that would very much effect our income and jobs in a major way. In my experience, the idea there is not to fulfill the residents with opportunities happy lives, but to use them as money trees and data trackers for medications that were dangerous and unnecessary. Each time I pointed these items out, my job security was in some way threatened, but I resigned recently due to an expectation to take on an entire extra position on top of our own, one that pays an entire extra salary, except without the entire extra salary?... Overall, the idea of helping the residents is amazing, because trust me, they need as much help as they can get. They need advocates that are willing to say what is right and do what is right for the benefit of the person being served and NOT for the sole benefit of the organization. I hope that enough people will take the time to read this and understand that it is an encouragement to apply and to point out every single thing you notice that would make you mad if someone imposed the rule/idea into your personal life. Please.
