The NASA Goddard Space Flight Center’s Employee Welfare Association (GEWA) operates an onsite retail store within the Center’s Greenbelt duty station that services 9,000 employees, contractors and visitors. The recently renovated store, open Monday through Friday, from 8:30 – 4:00, offers the Goddard community the chance to purchase quality merchandise with a space and science theme, in addition to convenience items and services, such as theme park ticket sales, to employees. We are seeking an experienced individual with strong communication and team-building skills to lead a collaborative team to operate the store on a daily basis, analyze and present store performance metrics to Center Management, and develop and execute short and long-term plans for merchandising and new services.

Applicants without a Bachelor’s degree will NOT be considered. Applicants MUST be able to pass a financial and criminal background investigation required for badged employment onsite at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland.


  • Provide sales advice and support to customers on the sales floor
  • Analyze sales, inventory, invoice and other expense data, develop reports, and present periodic reports of store performance to Center Management
  • Develop and present and execute plans for merchandising, new business-driving events and new services to employees
  • Develop communication, to include store signs, social media such as Facebook and Twitter, and e-mail messages to promote merchandise and services to employees
  • Work collaboratively with store personnel and Center Management to anticipate and resolve workplace-related issues
  • Arrange and participate in vendor meetings and trade shows to obtain new product knowledge and make product recommendations to Center Management
  • Maintain awareness of market trends in the retail industry related to the product line in the GEWA Exchange store and understand customer demand
  • Provide guidance to other store employees in day-to-day retail activities
  • Be in compliance with all applicable federal and state hygiene and safety requirements and maintain a safe and hazard-free work area


  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Excellent retail and customer service skills
  • Experience with analyzing and communicating business performance
  • Strong strategic planning skills
  • Experience in formulating and executing plans for merchandising and new services
  • Prior demonstrated successful experience with leadership of a collaborative team
  • Superior organizational, time management skills, and the ability to multitask
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Excel, Word, PowerPoint and Outlook
  • Experience in developing and using various types of electronic communication to promote the services of an organization or establishment
  • Demonstrated excellent verbal and written communication skills
