Pushing the envelope is this company's business. NE Opco, dba National Envelope, produces billions of envelopes a year, ranging from regular office to customized envelopes for direct-mail use. NE Opco offers envelopes with windows, translucent envelopes, CD/DVD mailers, booklet-style envelopes, envelopes with clasps, and presentation folders. It operates a handful of manufacturing facilities and distribution centers in the US and Canada. Products are sold via printing paper distributors and consumer-direct businesses. The company was started in 1952 and owned by its founder William Ungar and his family. In 2010 The Gores Group acquired National Envelope, enabling the company to emerge from bankruptcy.
Despite National Envelope's industry dominance, the recession coupled with the growing shift to e-mail and online banking left the company unable to service its debt and seeking bankruptcy relief. The company proved an attractive acquisition target to The Gores Group, which managed to scoop up the envelope company in a $280 million deal. Renamed NE Opco, it is the official envelope maker for every significant paper mill in North America. Proprietary agreements are enjoyed with Boise, Domtar, International Paper, Mohawk, Wausau, and many others. NE Opco is also a supply giant to many merchants and wholesalers.
Moving forward, NE Opco has rationalized its operations and shifted its product portfolio. Between 2008 and 2010 the company closed and consolidated production at plants across the US. It shuttered its facilities in Lenexa, Kansas, Worcester, Massachusetts, and Austell, Georgia in 2010. With each curtailment, manufacturing has been transferred to neighboring facilities.
NE Opco is simultaneously developing a reputation for sustainable manufacturing practices along with a slate of eco-friendly offerings. The company's selection includes products certified by the Forest Stewardship Council and Rainforest Alliance. Products feature soy ink, biodegradable window film, recycled and post-consumer waste content, and chlorine free chemistry. In addition, NE Opco has launched a Carbon Neutral Products Program, which calculates the amount of carbon dioxide associated with making its products.
