The National Legal Aid & Defender Association (NLADA), founded in 1911, is America’s oldest and largest nonprofit association devoted to excellence in the delivery of legal services to those who cannot afford counsel. For 100 years, NLADA has pioneered access to justice at the national, state and local level through the creation of our public defender systems, groundbreaking legislation and the creation of institutions from the Sentencing Project to the Legal Services Corporation. A leader in the development of national standards for indigent defense services, NLADA also provides advocacy, training and technical assistance to indigent defense programs across the country.
NLADA seeks an experienced and analytical Research Director for its Justice Standards, Evaluation & Research Initiative. The Director will lead and drive two strategic goals: 1) promoting effective indigent defense systems and services and 2) advancing fair criminal justice policies generally, and pretrial justice policies specifically. These goals will be achieved through expanding the ability of the indigent defense community to deploy evidence-based and research-based approaches to a) increasing resources and b) promoting sound indigent defense and criminal and pretrial justice policies.
The Research Director will lead the further development and establishment of NLADA’s research program; use appropriate and creative methodology to design and manage research projects, which may involve the use of quantitative and/or qualitative methods; conduct, assist and train organizations on: research methodology, data collection and analysis, and program evaluation to improve practice quality and inform policy; assist and train organizations on how to set up or expand data infrastructure; support projects of JSERI’s Advisory Board to achieve tangible outcomes; produce “how-to” research materials for the indigent defense community; and, assess and Advise organizations about their research needs.
Qualified candidates will have a Master’s degree with 5 years experience in social science and/ or criminal justice. Ph.D preferred. The ideal candidate will possess strong analytical skills and a demonstrated ability to identify and execute research to support organizational goals, operations, and policy decisions are essential. Experience in building or designing databases and published research in public defense are preferred. Strong project management skills are required with a strong commitment to the mission and goals of NLADA, and a thorough understanding of its work.
