Navarro Discount Pharmacies operates 31 drugstores in South Florida. The regional drugstore chain caters to Miami's Cuban population with low prices and beauty products and fragrances for Latin women. The stores, which average about 20,000 sq. ft., also feature large, well-stocked baby departments and offer food items and Hispanic favorites. Navarro Discount Pharmacies has a 17% market share in South Florida, ahead of its larger rivals Walgreen and CVS. While the founding Navarro family still holds 40% of the drugstore chain, the family ceded contol of the company to investment firm MBF Healthcare Partners in 2007.
Navarro Discount Pharmacies is expanding its store base in South Florida with three to five new pharmacies slated to open annually over the next several years. Eventually the chain envisions expanding beyond South Florida to other Florida markets with large Hispanic populations.
In late 2007 the company acquired 11 pharmacies in Florida from Hispanic-owned drug store chain Sedano's.
In 2008 Navarro Discount Pharmacies launched Navarro's Savings Club, a prescription discount club designed to offer patients with little or no insurance discounts on over 400 prescription medications.
Founded in Havana, Cuba in 1940 by Jose Navarro Sr., the Navarro family left Cuba in 1961 and set up shop in Miami as Navarro Discount Pharmacies.
