New Heights was founded in October 2005 in New York City as a private, independent non-profit organization. Our mission is “to inspire inner-city youth to be leaders, champions and student-athletes and to empower them to be successful in high school, college and life.”

New Heights provides intensive, long-term support for promising young athletes from the inner city to develop the academic skills, leadership abilities and character traits ultimately necessary to be successful in life beyond sports. We work with approximately 200 kids, grades 5-12, year-round, in a comprehensive program that includes:

  • Travel basketball teams
  • Academic support, tutoring and counseling
  • High School preparation, guidance and placement services
  • College preparation, guidance and placement services
  • New Heights Summer Academy, a 5-week academic-athletic summer program


We are looking for a smart, dynamic leader who can support the organization and implementation of summer programming and lead the instruction of an academic component of the New Heights curriculum. New Heights runs a Summer Academy for middle school student-athletes – a 5-week comprehensive program to develop academic, athletic and leadership skills. Five weeks will take place in NYC on campus at the Loyola School in Manhattan from July 1 – August 2. The Assistant Director will work with New Heights staff to design and implement all Summer Academy programming and logistics.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Support the development and implementation of the innovative New Heights Summer Academy curriculum, with sports serving as a theme running throughout the lessons
  • Serve as an instructional leader for rising 6th, 7th and 8th graders in one of the academic courses
  • Support a team teaching approach by working with other counselors in the classroom
  • Help create and support culture throughout the Summer Academy
  • Support curriculum development and implementation and teacher evaluation throughout the summer
  • Support development and implementation of basketball curriculum
  • Run one staff training component on teaching/classroom management
  • Attend training sessions prior to the start of the Summer Academy
  • Support logistics and administration, including:

- Transportation and busing
- Food
- Facilities
- Program Schedules and Calendar
- Field Trip/Activities Final Approval

Additional Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree required
  • Passion to help bring educational opportunity to youth from poor communities in NYC
  • A deep understanding and personal experience with the relationship between academic engagement and athletic participation
  • At least three years of experience in a teaching, coaching and/or managerial capacity in an urban school or organization that provides direct services to inner city youth
  • Exceptional leadership, networking and relationship-building skills
  • Bilingual (English & Spanish) desirable
  • Excellent organization and written and oral communication skills - ability to effectively articulate the New Heights mission to youth and families, partners, funders and the community
  • Highly positive and enthusiastic style - capable of motivating others
  • Ability to thrive in a small, intense, fast-paced, start-up environment that emphasizes teamwork and collective responsibility
