Great start up and opportunity
Account Executive (Former Employee), Chicago, ILJune 5, 2014
Pros: fresh top notch
Cons: n/a
I enjoyed the experience with the startup and breaking into the business. The company was generous in all that they offered from pay to benefits to travel. They spared no expense. Unfortunately the company was absorbed by News Corp back in the late 90's.

New World summary as a worker
Checkout Operator (Former Employee), Freemans Bay, Auckland CityAugust 13, 2014
New World is the most expensive Superette that I know of still I spent my money there whilst I was working there. I enjoy the atmosphere and the interaction. I would say I learned a lot about Culture and stock management to. I enjoyed working with a team and doing shift work with them. There was no hard work involved. The most enjoyable part of my role – more... was to see my customers keep coming back with smiling faces. If I had to work at New World my whole life I would be happy enough to do so. – less

Great first job
Checkout Operator (Former Employee), Orewa, AucklandJuly 30, 2014
Pros: lots of variety in job duties
Cons: hours can be long, rostered or had hours changed without being asked, hard to get time off in less than a weeks notice
It's great as a first time job. Learnt lots of different things while working there such as checkout duties, cash handling, customer service, stocking shelves, fish bar duties, cleaning etc. Always something to do during the quiet periods so you didn't just have to stand at your station the whole time and time went by faster. People who I worked with – more... were very nice and most of the customers were nice as well. Sometimes hard to get time off, usually had to put in 1 - 2 weeks notice and quite hard if you needed someone to swap shifts with at short notice and later on it became a rule that a manager had to approve it. Sometimes just rostered on or had shifts made longer without being asked. – less

Check-out Operator (Former Employee), Victoria Park, AucklandJuly 3, 2014
Very challenging environment, if you can handle pressure then this is a job for you. Everyday is similar, the co-workers are very friendly.

Checkouts demands accuracy and time management as well as being punctual. Customers are very friendly and can make your day go a bit faster.

Hopefully there will be advancement opportunities once my 3-month probationary period is up. General working environment is ok
Check-out operator (Current Employee), SMay 18, 2014
Pros: the opportunity to earn a salary
Cons: long hours and weekends in order to earn a living wage
In this environment it is entirely up to you as an individual to create opportunities for advancement. I would like to see myself advancing beyond remaining in check-outs and find the repetitive nature of this job enough to make me determined to rise above and beyond.
The most enjoyable part of the job is getting to meet the locals and visitors to the – more... town (it's a tourist-based, seasonal place). – less

New Wrrold Whitianga Service deli
Deli Assistant (Former Employee), Whitianga, New WorldApril 27, 2014
A typical day in the service deli would be providing top notch customer service to customers, slicing/shaving meats for the window, preparing meats or salads for the window, racking chickens to be cooked, pulling chickens out of oven and wrapping for sale.. I learnt to be more patient with co-workers and customers, I learnt how to prepare delicious – more... meats and salads. The hardest part of the job was when you were rushed off your feet, and had a lot of cleaning to get done before the shop closed and you had to go home. The BEST part of the job was the people, the owners and managers were always smiling and very friendly, also my co-workers were fantastic! – less

Fun and Challenging
Delicatessen Manager (Former Employee), New World EastridgeApril 6, 2014
Pros: flybuys, great staff
Cons: long hours
Early starts involving setting up the deli, doing price changes for weekly specials, training of new staff, completing weekly stock takes. Bargaining deals with company reps, marketing and presentation of products. Coming up with new ideas to sell different products and best of all serving customers. The staff were great and helped out a lot. The hardest – more... part was coming up with new ideas for the hot cabinet and making sure that the set up stayed fresh and relevant. Loved serving customers and helping them with making choices from the deli. – less
