The council is a group of teens representing the 6 communities of Newport County (Little Compton, Tiverton, Portsmouth, Middletown, Newport, and Jamestown). These representatives work as a group to tackle issues they have in their communities and state. As a group, they work to positively affect the outcome of issues in the towns. Their goal is to address youth issues, develop leadership, promote community activism, and deliver results. They serve a s a voice for the teen community in Newport County.
The group is made of selected and dedicated teens interested in effecting change. In approaching change, they may organize petitions, gatherings, and demonstrations. Their hope is to organize and promote positive social change in Newport County.
The Newport County Youth Council began as a spin off the Teen Ambassadors of the Newport County Prevention Coalition. With the aid of adult advisors, established organizations, and supportive teens, the council began its development in February, 2006. As time passes, new members will become involved and alumni will graduate.
