Overall, ok! Micro managed (depends on the manager). No flexible hours and no work from home is an issue.

Sports Reporter / Editorial Assistant (Former Employee), Kew Gardens, NYAugust 14, 2013
When it was New York Newsday, it was a fun environment to compete with the Daily News and New York Post for stories. The supervisor was always helpful, trying to develop your skills.

Interesting, Challenging, Fun
Freelance Reporter (Current Employee), Melville, NYNovember 11, 2012
The most enjoyable part for me is always meeting new and interesting people of all ages. The hardest part is always staying on deadline because a story doesn't always start on time and often they can run longer than expected but I absolutely love what I do.

Great internship for millions of reasons
Editorial Intern (Current Employee), Melville, NYJuly 31, 2012
Having the opportunity to work at one of the nation's largest daily newspapers is enough to celebrate. Working in the opinion office, surrounded by journalists with 200+ years experience divided among them. Not only has the position been an amazing learning experience, but it has also forced me to work on topics I don't particularly have an interest – more... in and make them into worthwhile pieces. – less

miserable conditions and sub-par management
Team Lead (Former Employee), Melville, NYJuly 30, 2012
Pros: flexible with pto
Cons: everything
the people in charge of my department (customer service) have been there since the stone age. they do nothing and expect EVERYTHING in return. If you are a complete moron they love you, if you know how to balance your checkbook they are intimidated if you went to college they will do whatever it takes to destroy you.

Difficult - downsizing and mergers caused much turmoil pre-Cablevision
Buyer/P-Card & American Express Administrator (Former Employee), Melville, NYJuly 3, 2012
Pros: hometown culture...
Cons: merger
Started as a part time switchboard operator, worked my way up - Engineering Assistant, to Assistant Buyer, to a Buyer. I also ran the Procurement Card program. Post merger with the Tribune When Newsday was a vibrant place to work. However post merger the cultural difference, along with the strain of a merger downsizing made it a dismal, and hollow working – more... environment. I was downsized in 2004, and subsequently was employed by Cablevision - the current Newsday owners. Since that time, I've heard from colleagues that things have changed for the better. – less

Multifaceted position working with a fun, family oriented group.
Administrative Assistant (Former Employee), Melville, NYFebruary 17, 2012
Pros: incredibly talented, cohesive team, softball games, lunch picnics on nice days, very family oriented, great benefits, flexibility.
This was one of my favorite positions. I enjoyed the varied duties which ranged from purchasing to payroll and meeting/events planning. I also interviewed the families of 9/11 victims and composed the free obituaries being offered by Newsday. Benefits included comprehensive, competitive medical for my family, generous vacation days, sick and personal – more... days, 401k and company stock. The company tried to hire and promote from within when possible - which is a practice I agree with. After being bought out by Tribune, the employees of the online division - which was my division - were let go and replaced by Tribune employees. I was given a position in Classifieds. Though I did not enjoy the new position as much, I was thankful to Newsday for making an attempt to keep me employed. I left the company because I was a single mother and had to move for financial reasons. – less
