Under general supervision of the Director of New Technology, the R&D Engineer II applies principles and techniques of mechanical engineering and related sciences to research, analyze, and develop new and existing technologies that might have application to the cleaning industry. This person will both lead projects and participate in project teams. The R&D Engineer II is responsible for developing and executing detailed project plans. This activity includes everything from initial research and evaluation of ideas through creation of CAD models and prototypes to be tested and qualified, working toward common group short and long term initiatives in an R&D lab environment.


  • Assists in the development of detailed R&D project plans, including tasks, timelines, budgets, and deliverables
  • Works individually or as part of a team to meet project objectives as defined by company and group initiatives
  • Develop relationships with external business, academic, and entrepreneurial community, and facility collaborative efforts and partnerships
  • Participates in brainstorming and creative thinking activities
  • Contribute new ideas and develop proposals for new projects through self-initiative activities
  • Creates CAD models to study, iterate, and document potential solutions
  • Builds or coordinates the build of prototypes and test fixtures
  • Creates test plans and procedures, carries out testing and methodically documents results in an accurate and detailed fashion
  • Tracks project deliverables and reports on status
  • Records innovations and discoveries
  • Performs preliminary Intellectual Property (IP) /Patent searches on technologies and ideas
  • Participates in the investigation of new technologies
  • Works in an R&D environment: takes a technology about which he/she know little or nothing, researches and learns about it, determines if and what value it has for our applications, and develops it to a level to which it could be incorporated into a saleable product
  • Distributes knowledge and promotes the spirit of innovation throughout the global product development company


  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (BSME preferred) or equivalent engineering education, MS, ME, or PhD beneficial


  • Minimum of 4-8 years of engineering work experience (R&D environment)

  • Strong mechanical aptitude and hands-on approach to solving problems
  • Ability to perform simple fabricating and/or modifying of components and perform assembly of functional prototypes, mechanical and electromechanical

  • Ability to thrive in a collaborative team environment
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Internal communication skills: ability to condense complex concepts and results into simplified reports and presentations

  • Knowledge of design for experiments
  • Willingness to do routine testing and other mundane tasks as required
  • Knowledge of patents and patent process
  • General knowledge of electrical, hydraulic, fluid, software, and other engineering disciplines
  • General knowledge of manufacturing methods, processes, and materials
  • Ability to read, and interpret, and markup engineering drawings
  • Willingness to travel on an as needed basis to support group objectives


  • Proficiency in Pro/Engineer and PDM Software (Creo Elements Pro 5.0 and Intralink 9.1 or PDM Link 10.1 preferred)
  • Basic knowledge of FEA and/or CFD software preferred
  • Working knowledge in use of MS Access, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Project
  • Some knowledge of a programming language or web software tools beneficial
  • Capability to learn new software
