Depends on which unit/department/shift you work
wheel cog (Current Employee), cube farm – April 30, 2013
Pros: good benefit package, mobility for some (though not all) disciplines
Cons: management buy their own bs and prefer the ones who echo it back. but that's what suits do, isn't it?
There are excellent aspects about this place.

Importantly, it's in the black. [Most hospitals aren't, so they always cry poverty--especially with respect to salary and raises. (I'm looking at *you*, Winthrop, South Nassau and CHNLI.) Same goes for nonprofits in general.]

The organization is relatively stable, though the effects of new healthcare regulations – more... on the bottom line remain to be seen. The organization saw that coming and planned for it--so that's something.

No raise for the hoi-polloi last year, but there was a "bonus" check. This year, the usual 2.5% raise.

The place is GIGANTIC (45000 employees) and there are a lot of silos. Some silos are great and others are miserable, depending on the manager. – less

North Shore LIJ Health System
Director, Injury Prevent/Absence Management/Safety (Current Employee), Lake Success New York – April 20, 2013
Pros: many opportunities for career advancement and to make changes for large groups of employees
Cons: rapid growth can result in too few resources to adequately accomplish objectives.
This is a large and rapidly growing health system, adapting to rapid changes in the health care landscape. The NSLIJ Health System transitioning to the health prevention mode for health care, which is a complex transition for a company which has been primarily involved in the provision of disease/health condition treatment.

The health system has the – more... advantage of being very culturally diverse, which presents the challenges of being able to tailor services to many population groups. – less

It was stressful attempting to work in that arena.
Nurse Practitioner (Former Employee), LIJ – April 5, 2013
Pros: good benefits
Cons: disrespected, no support, you are just a number in the conglomerate. unable to take time off.
I felt that the company and the leaders were not receptive to
new employees. They are very clannish. They
do not respect other people's time. Once you
are employed there, you are married to the job.
You are bombarded with paper work and emails.
A practitioner needs a secretary to function in
that organisation. The patient load is unreasonable.
As a – more... psych NP you have to address both psych and
medical issues. You are told by the medical
attending 'it is not my job'
Mind you, you have 11 primary patients. They want you, the NP to discharge patients that
you were not treating on other units. Sometimes you are
covering patients on two other unit and write the discharge
summaries.
I left because I became sick. Time off is very problematic. – less

No pay on orientation
RN Homecare (Current Employee), Anonymous – January 16, 2013
Pros: friendly people to work with
Cons: pay
I just began working here. On orientation in which they pay RNs with 10+ years experience $120/day for one week. Then when you are shadowing another RN you don't get paid at all!!!! Then when I finally do get paid because I need to push myself off orientation to get paid- the pay totally sucks!! It's way below cost-of-living level. I've lived in smaller – more... cities and got paid substantially more. It gives me the horrible impression that NSLIJ doesn't value skilled training or moving on in education for that matter. I definitely don't feel like a valued employee when I have to work for free as an expectation. I will be looking elsewhere. – less

North Shore
Operations Manager- Customer Service (Current Employee), Melville, NY – December 27, 2012
Pros: salary, benefits, working for a great company
Cons: advancement can be slow because it is such a large company with alot of competition
NSLIJ is a great company to work for. The company offers great benefits and salaries. There are many different corporate offices and facilities so there are many different employee experiences. Personally, I work in an office that is your typical office structure and it is what you make of it. Co-workers are a pleasure to work with.

Lack of respect for physicians and no opportunity for academic or financial advancement
MD (Current Employee), Cohen Children's – December 8, 2012
Pros: hard working, dedicated physicians, muses, and staff
Cons: administration runs a business without recognizing patients come here because of the doctors
Physicians are constantly asked to see more patients with less support. No work-life balance. No salary increases for years, not even cost-of -living adjustments despite promised by CCMC administration at faculty meeting.

Case Manager and Managed Care Coordinator (Current Employee), Westbury, NY – December 3, 2012
Pros: competitive salary
Cons: large caseload
I have learned about the actual management of what goes into the "case" from Discharge Planning to Case Management onto Managed Care Coordinator to being discharged back into the community.
An extraordinary amount of work goes into each and every case.

The best Health System to be employed by in the New York area
Medical Secretary (Current Employee), Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation – November 24, 2012
Pros: teamwork, commitment to personal and professional excellence
Cons: everyone can have a difficult day with a large work load, unplanned emergencies that need to be addressed.
There is never at typical day at work. Every day is a new challenge. I organize all aspects of my department. Multi-tasking is a must and sometimes it can be overwhelming. My co-workers are like family. The whole Glen Cove facility is like family. When things get difficult, there is always someone willing to help in a pinch. Even our doctors don't mind – more... getting behind the desk to help. We are a great team. North Shore LIJ Health Systems is all about team work and outstanding patient care. – less

Productive and Friendly Environment
Client Service Representative (Former Employee), Lake Success, NY – May 10, 2012
A typical day at work would be answering phones to doctors and hospitals for patients' results which could get busy at the beginning but gradually slows down later at night when most doctor offices are closed. What I have learned from working at this job is helping clients and physicians with results and learning how to be more outgoing over the phone – more... and in person to help the clients and physicians with what they need to make them better. My co-workers were very nice and whenever I needed help or they needed help, we were always helping each other out in each and every way. The hardest part of the job would be working the late night shift when there is only one or two people and gets very busy without the help of our supervisor. The most enjoyable part of the job would be knowing that I am helping out clients. I also enjoyed the fact when there would field trips to our laboratory for younger people so that they can learn more about the laboratory field while in summer camps. – less
