Position name - Program Manager, REDIzone

The Program Manager of the REDIzoneSM (Research, Entrepreneurship, Discovery, Innovation) Program will support the entrepreneur by assisting with business, strategic and market entry planning, budget and finance management, resource development, operations design, technology development and funding. This position provides a platform for creative thinkers who take risks and provide solutions to consumer needs. We are looking for candidates with experience starting or running a business, exceptional leadership experience, strong intellect, and the ability to execute with excellence. The ideal candidate will enthusiastically promote the REDIzoneSM and actively search for suitable REDIzoneSM clients. The position is expected to require approximately 20 hours of commitment per week and is funded through a two year award (end date December 31, 2014) from the Ohio Development Services Agency. Future commitment and funding will be determined by the success of the REDIzoneSM Program.

The Program Manager will be responsible for working closely with startup companies to help them navigate the unique challenges of early stage growth. He or she will work directly with the REDIzoneSM client companies’ management team to define, plan, attract resources, and execute against strategic initiatives in the areas of fundraising/financial management, product development/commercialization, sales and marketing, and organizational development. The Program Manager will also lead investment efforts in early-stage companies, managing the process from identification of investment opportunities through due diligence efforts, initial funding, and representing the REDIzoneSM program’s interests as a Board Observer.

Internal Responsibilities

  • Manage the day-to-day operations of the REDIzoneSM
  • Accelerate commercialization of high potential biomedical technology companies
  • Interface between client companies and the advisory board
  • Ensure milestones of development are being met by each client company
  • Assist clients with business plan development, market entry, preparation of pro forma profit and loss statements, and strategic planning
  • Act as mentor/coach for each client company
  • Assist client companies with tapping into Venture capital and angel networks

External Responsibilities

  • Promote entrepreneurship and technology in the region by representing the REDIzoneSM program at biomedical technology-related meetings and events
  • Identify and recruit suitable clients for the REDIzoneSM
  • Define and drive projects that enhance the REDIzoneSM program’s ability to provide resources and knowledge to the regional technology community
  • Assist in creating strong partnerships with the top regional universities and research institutions
  • Help to leverage Northeast Ohio’s biomedical infrastructure support within regional entrepreneurial network


  • Minimum of Bachelor degree; MBA preferred.
  • Significant biomedical industry experience (at least 5 years) including direct functional responsibility for defining, building, and launching technology-based products to the commercial market.
  • Prior senior level management experience with both large and start-up technology companies preferred
  • Breadth of technology and commercial market experience preferred with the ability to quickly learn about new industries, business models, and technologies
  • Understanding of FDA 510k process and other regulatory approvals, including pre-clinical animal studies
  • Prior experience in investment-oriented or management consultant industries a plus, particularly in early-stage financing
  • Familiarity with SBIR/STTR grant process a plus
  • Previous experience working in a start-up environment; experience owning/running a business preferred
  • The successful candidate will have the natural ability to lead and influence by providing a clear vision and strategy for success
