Productive Work Enviorment
Human Resources Student Worker (Current Employee), Flagstaff, ArizonaJune 3, 2014
Pros: 15 minute breaks and flexible schedule
Cons: filing, multiple projects at once and papercuts.
Human Resources is great to work for, especially if you are a student. They have flexible hours, incorporate their needs along with yours and pay minimum wage. If you do well you also can receive raises. A typical day at my work consists of working at the front, answering phone calls, checking the mail, helping customers. I also meet with the Training – more... manager and assist her with anything she needs like enrolling new employees in classes, helping her set up for a class and working with PeopleSoft, a program NAU uses specifically. The hardest part of my job is keeping myself focused because I also a lot of filing which can get boring or tiring. Also staring at a computer screen for several hours a day can take a toll, but the 15 minute breaks they allow us help. The most enjoyable part of my job is working with the Training manager, she is sweet and understanding and always in a happy positive mood. This helps the days go by faster. My co-workers are also great to work with because they always help when you ask for it and will never let you down. – less

Productive and hard working team of mentors
Transfer Peer Mentor (Current Employee), FlagstaffMay 13, 2014
Pros: enjoyable office environment
Cons: not enough hours
My job duties were to mentor transfer students in their first semester at NAU. I held one on one meetings to discuss classes, personal issues, and helped students get connected to the NAU community. I learned the values of teamwork and hard work. It was an incredibly rewarding job and I look forward to applying what I learned in this job in my career. – more... My co-workers were extremely supportive and helpful. The hardest part of the job was to help students who needed help in class but were to scared to ask for a tutor. The most enjoyable part of this job was holding events for students to meet each other because I could see the effects of our efforts directly affecting the lives of transfer students. Giving other students an opportunity that was not offered to me assures me that NAU is on the right path to help all students feel like they are all part of a community of students at NAU where they belong. – less

NAU Chem Department
General Chemistry 152 Lab Teaching Assistant (Current Employee), Flagstaff, AZApril 23, 2014
Pros: working with my fellow classmates.
Cons: hours were inconsistent when grading was not needed.
The NAU Chemistry Department was the best job that I could possibly have had during my time at NAU. I was able to have a support group within my own major, as well as being able to contribute to other student's education.
My typical day as a Teaching Assistant consisted of managing a class of 20-24 general chemistry students. I show the students the – more... proper lab techniques and procedures for the experiment that particular day. Then, I manage the lab as they do their work.
My coworkers were all of my fellow class-mates in my own classes, so the environment was very comfortable for both new and experienced workers.
The hardest part of the job goes hand-in-hand with the most enjoyable part of the job; seeing students succeed in lab was always my pride and joy. However, many students often struggle with the concepts and skills from lab, so I had to constantly reinforce their knowledge with various teaching techniques. Throughout most of the semester, the student's struggle. However, by the end of the semester, I get the opportunity to see how much I have influenced their education, both in my class and in other chemistry courses. – less

Researched and managed a particular stock in the portfolio and gave presentations based on our findings.
Student Managed Investment Fund (SMIF) (Former Employee), Flagstaff, AZMarch 3, 2014
Pros: challenging, learned a lot about the stock market, and interesting material.
Cons: n/a
This was an elective class where students use Bloomberg Terminals to do research on a certain stock and sector of the S&P 500. We would do research to better understand why the stock or sector was doing so well or so poorly. After we had done research we would give reports to either sell, buy and keep what the class had in that stock. We also did reports – more... on the companies earnings to see how they compared to their forecasts. – less

Fulfilling work days
Professor's Aide (Former Employee), Flagstaff, AZDecember 1, 2013
Pros: working with students
Cons: slow work pace
I would get to class and sit in the back to assist with management issues. I would also help clarify any questions students had and allowed them to come to me for help. I organized and ran multiple study groups and proctored exams. The hardest part of the job was that I was only in the working classroom space three times a week, and I would get bored – more... fairly quickly. The best part was seeing my students who came for help get A's. – less

Great place to work, friendly and fun atmosphere
Medical Office Manager (Former Employee), Cottonwood, AZSeptember 14, 2013
Pros: friendly atmosphere
Cons: not much area for growth
Days at any job should not become typical; greatness comes when one challenges and self motivates him/herself then others to move forward. The hardest part of the job, which also has been the most fun and fulfilling experiences about the job for me as a manager, has been to see the changes in employees growth and development. Through motivation and – more... empowerment I have been able to create those changes and make my employees achieve more than they ever thought possible. Moving forward in any business is challenging, sometimes risky, sometimes fun; never typical. Overall, working with people and overseeing the positive changes in them and then achieving organizational goals has been the most enjoyable part of the job. – less

Research & Teaching Assistant (Former Employee), Flagstaff, AZJuly 25, 2013
Pros: wonderful outdoor opportunities and excellent weather for the majority of the year.
Cons: high cost of living.
While at Northern Arizona University, I was motivated with an eclectic range of educational and outdoor opportunities. These ranged from teaching basic biology labs to going to scientific seminars, to applying my research in my lab to enjoying the weekends hiking dormant volcanos. I commonly studied, worked and ate lunch with a diverse group of students – more... from each continent. I would recommend Northern Arizona University to anyone wanting a great education or work location that has many recreational opportunities. – less

Supervisor (Current Employee), Flagstaff, AZJuly 5, 2013
Pros: wonderful boss, flexible vacation time
I supervise 14 student workers and worked directly with customers, and NAU faculty and staff. My co-workers were great people, and kept a very lively and enjoyable work place, though they were often lackadaisical with their duties and times of arrival. The most enjoyable part of my job was seeing the student works grow and progress in there education – more... at work and at the University. The hardest part of my job was dealing with aggravated and short tempered customers which are a more than common occurrence when you work at the post office. – less
