About Novant Health
With a dozen hospitals and more than 2,700 beds, Novant Health certainly has what it takes to keep denizens along the Eastern Seaboard in tip-top condition. The not-for-profit health system provides medical care to residents in more than 30 counties throughout North and South Carolina and Virginia. Its largest facilities include the 920-bed Forsyth – more... Medical Center in Winston-Salem, North Carolina and the 600-bed Presbyterian Hospital in Charlotte, North Carolina. It also operates about 350 physician clinics, outpatient surgery, and diagnostic imaging centers. Additionally, Novant is home to nursing homes, rehabilitation and community outreach programs, and philanthropic foundations.
In addition to owning and operating an array of health care facilities, Novant provides management services for hospitals, including information technology and managed care efficiency. The health care network has been expanding its services in the region through partnerships and acquisitions. It really expanded its presence with the Novant Medical Group which encompasses more a broad spectrum of primary and specialty care services, and a network of 1,400 providers.
Novant has a strategic partnership with the Prince William Health System, which operates the 180-bed Prince William Hospital in Manassas, Virginia. Through the deal, Prince William became an affiliated member of Novant, and in exchange received some $240 million from Novant to improve its facilities. The company increased its ownership of certain joint venture affiliates from partner Health Management Associates (HMA), giving Novant full ownership and management rights to two facilities in North and South Carolina (Upstate Carolina Medical Center and Franklin Regional Medical Center).
Along with entering into affiliations and making acquisitions, Novant grows through new construction; it is currently building the Kernersville Medical Center, a 50-bed community hospital in the Winston-Salem area scheduled to open in 2011. Novant is also vying with two other hospital operators (Carolinas HealthCare System and Tenet Healthcare) to build a hospital in Fort Mill, South Carolina. All three organizations have submitted certificate of need (CON) applications to the state and are awaiting approval to expand in the region (which only one, if any, will receive). South Carolina law requires health care providers to obtain a CON before building or expanding health facilities. The CON is meant to reduce duplication of services among providers.
Other growth initiatives include the introduction of new programs and services at its hospitals and outpatient centers (which in turn attract more doctors and patients). In 2010, Brunswick Community Hospital added mobile lithotripsy for kidney stone treatment and a mobile diagnostic catheterization lab for diagnosing heart conditions. Forsyth Medical Center implemented a teleneurology medicine program so other hospitals can remotely access its clinical expertise. The Presbyterian Hospitals added da Vinci robotic surgery capabilities.
Novant's five foundations -- Presbyterian Hospital Foundation, Forsyth Medical Center Foundation, Thomasville Medical Center Foundation, Rowan Regional Medical Center Foundation, and Prince William Health System Foundation -- help the organization fund its various methods of growth, be they acquisitions or organic growth. They also aid the medical provider in establishing and running its various community outreach programs. Novant provides community education and screenings and supports health clinics that care for the uninsured.
