It is a good place for research. There are a lot of chances to communicate with top research scientists. Work load is a little high. And security level in the lab is high.

Challenging position at preeminent national lab
Research Associate (Current Employee), Knoxville, TN, USAFebruary 20, 2015
Cons: in the middle of nowhere
ORNL is a good place to work if you want to be around some of the most advanced computing and other sciences in the world. Lots of good people tend to be hampered by clueless management. The endless jockeying for funds get old.

ORNL is a fascinating workplace with an inspiring overall philosophy and history. The most difficult aspect was the commute.

Good Place to Work
Principal Investigator of CNMS proposal (Former Employee), CNMSJanuary 28, 2015
The people here are nice, and the equipment in the ORNL is almost the best all over the world. I love the lunch time, when people come together, have jokes and share their funny experiment of both work as well as daily life.
You have good opportunities to work with scientist from other universities, research institutes. I can Learn a lot from them.

Great, but not permanent.
Environmental Sciences Post-Bachelor (Current Employee), Oak Ridge, TNJanuary 7, 2015
Pros: work environment
Cons: job insecurity
Job security here is not the best. Many positions are only guaranteed for 1 year with the possibility of renewal after that. However, it is a great place to work.

Coworkers are all great. Management style is relaxed.

Management and co-workers are concerned with the end product and making life at work more enjoyable. You can be proud that you supported the overall accomplishments of the company even though your task are back office.

Cons: there have been a lot of management changes which are leading to morale issues.
This is run more like university than business. The co-worker are very unprofessional and there no clear direction on project and poor communication skills make it hard to complete projects,

Would not recomment this place to anyone, too much govt red tape
Sensor Systems Research & Development (Former Employee), Oak Ridge, TNSeptember 1, 2014
Too much govt involvement for me. For every one person working there is at least 4 people watching you. Countless govt regulations...

A great place to work!
Senior Secretary to Director (Former Employee), 1 Bethel Valley Road, Oak Ridge, TNApril 10, 2014
Pros: great work environment, great co-workers, up-to-date computers and other office equipment.
Cons: campus located in remote area.
Enjoyed a variety of tasks in positions held. Given opportunities to lead and received positive feedback and encouragement. Worked for a variety of organizations and was able to gain insight into the research and scientific as well as service organization sides of the company. My contacts were with external and internal customers and appreciated the challenge in providing extraordinary service to all. The most difficult part at times was maneuvering throughout the campus because of parking restrictions. But even this had a positive side because it provided needed exercise on days when I was tied to my desk.
