Need to be hard working and willing to work long hours
Co-Team Leader (Current Employee), Dover, DEMay 7, 2014
My day at Ollies is hard. You have to unload truck and have all freight out within 24 hours. You have to ticket all merchandise when it comes in. You have to work very long hours and sometimes come back to pull an over night just to make it happen.

Pros: employee discount, meeting new people.

The most enjoyable part of the job was the fact that everyone pulled together and worked together to provide the best shopping experience for the customers.

Extremely abusive management. Foul mouthed, threatening, constantly demeaning treatment of associates.
Store set up associate (Former Employee), Clarksville, TNMarch 26, 2014
I'm a former employee hired to do initial store set up in Clarksville, TN. I have been in retail and restaurant management for many years. This was the most abusive, condescending, threatening environment I've ever seen, with no respect to peoples' dignity. Humiliation used daily as a tool to keep people in line is not an acceptable business model by – more... any standard. Twice daily, at team meetings, multiple threats of termination were used to motivate people? It's one thing to expect productivity from an employee as compared to slave driving while cursing at the top of their lungs, never fast enough, treated like idiots, expected to rat each other out to upper management. It's a backstabbing culture; boot camp mentality. Drill sergeants yelling across the store. Constant pressure to perform at super-human levels. Having hired 60+ people for store set up, they announced the first day that their plan was to only have half left when the store was set up and in full operation. This was used many times per day as a scare tactic of termination to produce better employees?
Fear
Intimidation
Insults
Cursed at directly YELLING!
Foul, sexual comments made daily!
Perverted sexual jokes
No collaboration between managers for consistent store organization.
Who wants to work at only $8 per hour to be treated like that? What is human dignity worth? – less

Sales Associate (Former Employee), Gloucester, VAMarch 26, 2014
Pros: advancement opportunities, benefit package offered to full time and part time workers.
Cons: short staff at times.
I enjoyed working for this company even though I was hired for seasonal. In a short time I learned a lot about this company. This company offers you a great chance to advance if you are looking to make this a career choice. The management team and my co-workers were great to work with everyone made me feel comfortable and like part of the team. The – more... hardest part of the job was unloading the truck and the most enjoyable part of the job was helping the customers and getting the chance to know them on a first name bases. – less

Sales Associate (Former Employee), Forest City, NCJanuary 29, 2014
Pros: locker, break room, breaks
Cons: short shifts
I always showed up around 20-30 minutes eary for work just in case. I wasn't able to clock in until 5 minutes before shift. I enjoyed working with everyone there. There was many personailities there. Everyday was exciting and new. Management was great and nice. They never jumped down throats just helped you understand how to fix your mistakes. Hardest – more... thing about my job at Ollies was how we were always pushed to do more work than was possible in the amount of time given. I was never able to get my speed up like I wanted to due to always changing, however, the change did keep it exciting. I loved working at Ollies Bargain Outlet. – less

I loved my job doing the books!
Book Department Supervisor (Former Employee), Mechanicsburg, PAJanuary 14, 2014
Pros: loved working with my fellow coworkers and the customers who i came to know many of them by name.
Cons: lot of lifting, not enough help and management was always changing
Ollies has only been around since 1982. They started out with one store and now have 130 stores up and down the east coast. It is a discounted bargain store that has come along way. When I started back in 1999 there was around 30 stores. Ollies is doing very well in our economic situation. The store in Mechanisburg Pennsylvania where I was employed was – more... the first store that opened in 1982. I started out as a cashier for the first 2 years then was promoted to book supervisor. I enjoyed working in the book department but it was alot of work. Gradually I be came used to all the hard work but wished there was more help. – less

Sales Associate (Former Employee), Goldsboro, NCOctober 16, 2013
Working at Ollies was my first job so everything I know about retail I learned from working there. I was originally trained on the register but as time went on I was trained on the truck and on the floor. Pushing freight was my favorite part because I am good at it. I enjoyed working with my co workers too and we all got along pretty well.

Retail Enviroment with creative apsects
Co-Team Leader (Assistant GM) (Current Employee), Durham, NCSeptember 22, 2013
Pros: 20% discount, pto, several paid holidays (can not be taken on holiday)
Cons: bad health insurance, 401k match plan is below industry standard, unorganized as a company
Ollies is a freight driven company; they do not have planograms to adhere to, just key positions for the different seasons. A typical day is to try not to fall behind in the freight flow process and floor movement while at the same time trying to run the front end and recover at night. I enjoy not having to be constantly supervised by the DM. The hardest – more... part is getting what the company wants done with a cut labor budget and an unskilled staff. – less
