Your basic retail store, but with a horrible store manager.
CSA (Former Employee), Johnson City, NYMarch 2, 2015
Pros: employee discount, some co-workers.
Cons: company could be run better, clientele, upper-management.
Your average work day was like any retail setting. Overworked, underpaid, & dealt with crazy customers. Employees never got recognized & were always expected more of. The only good thing about the Johnson City Ollies was some of the coworkers, it was like a family. The store manager sat in the office all day, & was rude and impersonal with his employees. The ATL was overworked & didn't get enough credit (he was great). I would redo my work experience there if it was an different store manager. Pay was low, short breaks.

Ok place to work
Customer Service Specialist and Head Cashier (Former Employee), Seneca, PAFebruary 27, 2015
To many managment politics. Inventory needs to be organized better, as well as the delivery trucks. Aggressive sales tactics at the register.

Working for Ollies is an amazing treat its fast pace free flowing it forces you to be creative and think on your feet. But once you get into management it becomes forever changing extreamly fast pace and if you are not on the ball or one piece is missing it can sink your whole ship.

The job itself was okay but some of the things that went on weren't very good. A lot of the managers didn't want to do their job

Growing company experiencing "growing pains"
Store Manager (Former Employee), Gloucester, VASeptember 7, 2014
Pros: helping customers
Cons: never feeling like anything was accomplished
No matter how good a manager you are you're still going to work 60+ hours a week. You either will have to work extended hours to cover shifts because you won't be given the payroll you need or you'll be sent to other stores to help out. Directives are constantly being changed by home office so forget finishing major projects on time.

Company had some difficulty with structure and policy
Operations ASM (Former Employee), Parkersburg WVSeptember 3, 2014
Pros: fast paced and good old fashioned hard work
Cons: terrible management
This company loved to write the policy in pencil and then erase and rewrite it according to the situation at hand. It was a long time ago hopefully things have gotten more structured and better.

Need to be hard working and willing to work long hours
Co-Team Leader (Current Employee), Dover, DEMay 7, 2014
My day at Ollies is hard. You have to unload truck and have all freight out within 24 hours. You have to ticket all merchandise when it comes in. You have to work very long hours and sometimes come back to pull an over night just to make it happen.

Extremely abusive management. Foul mouthed, threatening, constantly demeaning treatment of associates.
Store set up associate (Former Employee), Clarksville, TNMarch 26, 2014
I'm a former employee hired to do initial store set up in Clarksville, TN. I have been in retail and restaurant management for many years. This was the most abusive, condescending, threatening environment I've ever seen, with no respect to peoples' dignity. Humiliation used daily as a tool to keep people in line is not an acceptable business model by any standard. Twice daily, at team meetings, multiple threats of termination were used to motivate people? It's one thing to expect productivity from an employee as compared to slave driving while cursing at the top of their lungs, never fast enough, treated like idiots, expected to rat each other out to upper management. It's a backstabbing culture; boot camp mentality. Drill sergeants yelling across the store. Constant pressure to perform at super-human levels. Having hired 60+ people for store set up, they announced the first day that their plan was to only have half left when the store was set up and in full operation. This was used many times per day as a scare tactic of termination to produce better employees?
Fear
Intimidation
Insults
Cursed at directly YELLING!
Foul, sexual comments made daily!
Perverted sexual jokes
No collaboration between managers for consistent store organization.
Who wants to work at only $8 per hour to be treated like that? What is human dignity worth?

energetic, upbeat, and a great place to work
Sales Associate (Former Employee), Gloucester, VAMarch 26, 2014
Pros: advancement opportunities, benefit package offered to full time and part time workers.
Cons: short staff at times.
I enjoyed working for this company even though I was hired for seasonal. In a short time I learned a lot about this company. This company offers you a great chance to advance if you are looking to make this a career choice. The management team and my co-workers were great to work with everyone made me feel comfortable and like part of the team. The hardest part of the job was unloading the truck and the most enjoyable part of the job was helping the customers and getting the chance to know them on a first name bases.

Fun and enjoyable workplace
Stocker (Former Employee), Johnson City, TNMarch 21, 2014
Pros: fun and enjoyable
Cons: third shift
Many different starts, first I started out pricing merchandise and stocking shelves, then I went to third shift were I helped to unload trucks, price merchandise and stock shelved.
