I got the opportunity through a program a local advertising agency was running at the time with the public schools in the city. There was a selection process and interview, in which only one person from each school could be chosen, there were two schools participating that year. When they came to announce to the class and hand out the applications, I was quick to spot typos and inconsistencies on the forms, which apparently made quite an impression. I was unexpectedly chosen as the second person from my school, making our internship team into a party of three members.
For interning, I would come in at 8 AM everyday. I was always 30 minutes early just so I could get a head start and check my schedule for the day. It was very exciting being taken around each department by our coordinator, and very inspiring to learn from the professionals working at their individual stations, so I was always eager to come in early. Our task for the summer, since we were the first internship group for their program, this was the first year of the program, was to document our time there, and record what we had achieved. The purpose of this was for us to be the voice for the program, to help it gain momentum and eventually spread to other schools and areas of our State.
The internship itself was very informative. When I first started, I was pretty secluded, very much a loner and barely able to make proper eye contact with anyone. My Co-Workers helped me to break out of my shell and our coordinators helped me to communicate properly through weekly interviews and encouragement. This was a paid internship. The pay was just a bonus in my mind, being there was like being on a field trip.
During break we would have the run of the cafeteria, which included a ping pong table. We had competitions with the other employees from time to time, since everyone would come in at a different time for their breaks. The agency believed in a holistic view, so everyone was free to choose their breaks as they deemed fit. This led to a very homely environment in which everyone felt like they were apart of a family, working to better the household as a whole.
We learned about public relations, brand coordination, brand advertising, advertising financials, television advertisement spots, slogan / phrases, and local and non-local collaboration with different communities. Each week we would have a review and assignment based on what we've learned during the week, and what we've learned up to that point. Assignments included working on actual projects being coordinated by the heads of each department and the reviews were conducted with actual conferences with our own coordinators and those we've learned from.
