People are great
Full Time Employee (Current Employee) –  Watkins, CONovember 7, 2017
Like any company focused on natural resources, Orica definitely has cycles and is coming out of a tough time for the mining industry. But, the people I work with are fantastic, very supportive and really make it fun to be at the office. I have met and worked with so many people from a variety of countries, it's a truly global company. The pay at Orica is very competitive, and I often hear from former employees that once they leave Orica - they quickly realize that the grass isn't always greener. I really like my job and love the people I work with!
Pros
Free Bbq lunch every Friday, on site yoga and fitness classes, smoothie bar, great benefits
Cons
Australia Corp office tough with the time differences sometimes

Packaging, Machine Operator (Former Employee) –  Bluefield, WVSeptember 15, 2017
Everybody would help you when you needed it. Even though it was a quick pace job, you was still able to have fun while getting your work done. I would highly recommend this job to a friend.

Truck Driver/Laborer (Former Employee) –  Bloomsburg, PAApril 30, 2017
Overall a good company to work for, hours you work are very brutal n fluctuate terribly. They don't strive in company advancement n don't have any programs to help a person move forward in the company. They tell you one thing n they totally do the opposite for you. Some management internal problems, too many people think there bosses n don't get held accountable for there jobs. There sales division is very poor, customer relationship with salesman is terrible. They have the work people in certain sales positions.

Site Manager (Former Employee) –  Galena, ILApril 28, 2017
Excellent place for a career. A typical day consisted of scheduling, maintaining equipment and constantly adapting to a changing environment. Management was top notch. The most enjoyable part of the job was working directly with customers and employees.

Driver Helper (Current Employee) –  Los Alamos, NMMarch 14, 2017
Management tripping over there own rules and won't follow them. No ownership within the company. Safety is only important in meetings and when the big man shows up, after that it's back to the same old same old. Driver pay is behind in comparison to over the road driving you need the over time just to make ends meet.12-16 hrs days if your lucky.
Pros
Good benefits that cost alot
Cons
Poor management to much hype not enough action.

Management no duty of care, employees are just number to them
Operator (Former Employee) –  West AustarliaFebruary 19, 2017
Management/supervisor are unrealistic. Working 12hrs a day plus 1/2hr drive to camp each way, almost everyday supervisor/ manager let everyone go home 1hour after our shift finish. We don't get over time. By the time we get to camp eat dinner and do laundry we only have maximum 6 hrs sleep before the next shift... Where is "Duty of Care". Staff is always fatigue because not having enough rest after a more than 12 hrs work. No work balance....can't even go to the time to get fit.
Pros
Good experience
Cons
Way too long hours with out overtime pay

Challenging Marketplace
Short Term Employee (Former Employee) –  Watkins, COOctober 26, 2016
Given the current conditions of the mining industry, the company is in very unsettling times. With a number of layoffs that have already occurred, and more expected, the company is in a position to really struggle. Although the US business is doing well, the culture around the office is suffering. Having to deal with corporate being in Australia makes it difficult to manage the business in North America.

AWFUL place to work
Operator (Former Employee) –  Marion, ILOctober 20, 2016
This heartless company likes to hire you on temporarily, use you and then lay you off right when you get comfortable financially with absolutely no warning or explaination. You can call back for your job and they ignore it, and claim to "not have enough work" but two weeks later have a hiring spree and even post job adds online here like this one. Just beware they will dump you when you least expect it and leave you with no income like they did us and we have a 2 yr old, and bills to pay. This place should be ashamed of themselves for how they treat their employees.
Cons
Favoritism, terrible management, don't care for their employees

MMU Operator (Former Employee) –  Templeton, MAAugust 31, 2016
Not a bad place to work but expect to work very hard all summer and then work only 40 hours in the winter. Start time varies day to day, typical start time is 2-5am. They will take the time to work with you and teach you things. The job can be demanding (16 hour days starting at 2am) but knowing then what I know now I would still have worked there.
Pros
great people, free travel, great benefits
Cons
long hours, early mornings, not very much room for advancement

Hard work and low pay
Driver/Operator/Laborer (Current Employee) –  MontanaJune 17, 2016
Lots of long days of unappreciated labor, long drives with some nights away from home, and very little support from upper management. Pay is lower than the industry average, old equipment, lots of corporate waste and no monetary bonuses irregardless of work quality. The "good ole boy" process of promotion is applied heavily within the company.
Pros
Company card for food
Cons
Hard labor with below average pay

Ok pay, laid back, close to perfect
Driver (Current Employee) –  Whitehall, MTJanuary 28, 2015
If the pay was a few dollars more an hour the job would be great. Supervisor is excellent to work with. The equipment is somewhat worn out, but it works. Actually work 3 of the 5 days in a week. They pay for meals and lodging if needed (usually once a month) while on the road. Always weekends off. Other than slightly low pay, and older trucks, this branch is a great place to be.
Pros
Laid back, free food, easy to get time off
Cons
Lower end of pay scale for occupation, worn out equipment

Recently a difficult place to work where the morale is very low.
Manager (Former Employee) –  United StatesOctober 23, 2014
Up to two or three years ago Orica was a great place to work. they provided a challenging place to grow and expand your knowledge in the business. The work was hard; but was enjoyable and there was a good sense of camaraderie at the company, that you belonged and you were part of the overall team and your work was important to the team.

During recent times Orica has become a very difficult place to work, there seems to be a constant shift in reorganizing the company which creates a feeling that the company lacks direction or focus. Change is good; however a change has to be in place long enough to reap the rewards of that change or learn the mistake from that change; which doesn't appear to be taking place in the company at this time. Moral in the company is very low due to this fact and there is a lack of communication from within; which adds more burden with all the uncertainty and jobs being made redundant.
