Psychology Graduate Practicum Student, San Antonio, TX - November 16, 2017
When first going in the students (a small group usually no more than 6) would review with a professor (which was a licensed counselor or psychologist) the files of the client's that were scheduled for that day. The shifts were approximately 4 hours and on average 3 clients were scheduled. The students usually worked in teams which meant 2 students in the room with the remaining team and professor behind a one way mirror. Half way through the sessions there would be a small break so the students could give their impressions to other team members including the professor and the other team members could give their impressions to the students in the room. There was of course occasional variations on this process. I learned to apply in practice all the counseling and therapy techniques that I had learned in my classes. The environment was supportive but honest in providing feedback to improve performance. Being able to help people resolve or cope with difficulties was very rewarding.
