"We were the first in the nation to buy a new 1050, the largest dozer Deere manufactures, when they came out about three years ago and that same dozer is on this job. New to Boyce's work is the use of a Topcon HiPer Lite+ GPS Survey System purchased from Ozark Laser and Shoring in Springfield specifically for this project.
Boyce had used Topcon in a more limited fashion on some of its previous jobs but decided to purchase a "total station" for this project because of all the surveying and all the points they were going to be needing, Boyce said. "We're using it to do our staking, grade checking, storm sewers, concrete walls, everything. We set up one permanent station on-site. It takes us about 20 minutes to get operational with it and then we're ready for the entire day."
According to Boyce, learning how to use the system was easier than he anticipated. "Topcon's people came down and spent several days on-site with us building models to download onto the system and showing us how to use it in the field and we haven't needed any help since then.
"It's helping our bottom line dramatically and also helping our owner's bottom line because instead of having to call a survey company to come out and continually put stakes in the ground, which means downtime while we're waiting plus the expense of the survey company, we can do it all ourselves on-site.
"Going to a total station is a large investment but we believe it will pay for itself on this one project and it's something I would recommend to other contractors," Boyce said.
