School Description: PAVE Academy Charter School prepares Kindergarten to 8th grade students to thrive in competitive high schools and four-year colleges. PAVE provides its students with a rigorous academic program and a community built on the school's core values of Perseverance, Achievement, Vibrance, and Excellent character. The school opened in August 2008 with approximately 88 Kindergarten and 1st grade students and will add an additional grade each year until it serves nearly 450 students in Kindergarten – 8th grade. In 2012 – 2013, PAVE’s serves 300 students in Kindergarten – 5th grade. In 2013 – 2014, PAVE’s Middle School will serve nearly 100 5th and 6th grade students. Middle School will continue to grow each year until it serves 200 5th – 8th grade students.

Position Summary: The Middle School Academic Dean will be an integral part of the founding team that will equip scholars with the academic skills and character traits requisite for acceptance in to competitive high schools and ultimately colleges. The Academic Dean will oversee, coach and support teachers on the Middle School staff to achieve high academic results while maintaining a “no excuses” school culture for all PAVE students. PAVE’s Academic Dean will lead the transition for scholars moving from 4th to 5th grade, and support the everyday needs of our students. They will work directly with the Middle School Principal to build a community of support for our scholars.

Reporting directly to the Principal as a member of the Middle School Instructional Leadership Team, the Academic Dean will help establish a strong achievement centered culture; coach all teachers to excellence using data to inform decisions; ensure the functionality of systems that support student achievement and behavior; and design targeted individual and group professional development for teachers.


  • Exemplify PAVE’s core values and promote a positive, professional and efficacious image of PAVE Academy at all times
  • Work closely with Principal to establish a positive and achievement-oriented culture which reflects PAVE Academy’s core values
  • Work with Principal to design and implement professional development differentiated for all staff members including setting specific goals for teaching staff and contributing to teacher performance evaluations
  • Support and contribute to the continued development and implementation of a rigorous, college preparatory curriculum including a vertical scope and sequence aligned to national standards through continuous review of assessments, unit plans, and lesson plans
  • Model instruction by leading, co-teaching, and pushing-in to classrooms as needed for support in academic and school culture. Teach when necessary. Participate in Data Driven Plans specific to scholar intervention and take groups for targeted instruction as needed
  • Supervise, lead, and set vision for common social times including breakfast, lunch, recess, community meeting, and dismissal
  • Ensure the consistency and quality of the use of the behavior referral system and ladder of consequences attached to the system through shared ownership and monitoring of behavior referrals, suspensions, detentions, and other behavior-based consequences and communication of this to parents and families
  • In partnership with the Principal, monitor all school-wide systems including Academic Units in core content areas, testing cycles including Internal Interim Assessments, consistent culture systems, PAVE checks and incentives
  • Any other responsibilities determined by the Principal

Qualifications and Experience

  • A strong commitment to PAVE’s mission and vision
  • At least 3 years teaching experience (in an urban or charter school preferred) with proven track record of academic results
  • Demonstrated leadership experience in leading and managing adults
  • Possesses excellent oral and written communication skills and personal organization
  • Bachelor’s Degrees (required), Master’s Degree (preferred)
  • Intellectual passion for curriculum development, assessment and instruction
  • Adaptive and flexible; desire to be part of a founding team
  • Belief and commitment to the Charter School movement


Compensation will be competitive and commensurate with experience. Substantial merit bonuses will be awarded each year based on performance metrics established by the Principal and Executive Director. In addition to financial compensation, all PAVE teachers are equipped with a laptop computer, email, necessary instructional supplies, and extensive professional development.
