Staffing and Management issues makes this job unbearable
Youth Care Counselor (Current Employee) –  Woodland Hills, CAJanuary 15, 2018
Through a Youth Care Counselor position, I have gotten hands on experience with teens in probation and fostercare and have been able to learn more about their world. The position is rather easy to do and feels more like being a babysitter than a "counselor."

Pac Lodge is unstable. The cottages are constantly understaffed and Youth Care Counselors are not trained properly. In my time at Pac Lodge, I have seen people quit within a month, even one person quitting after a week! It is a revolving door of staff and you don't have a reliable team to work with, which means very little support while on the job.

YCCs are not given the resources they need to do their job adequately. When I have asked for some needs, I have been told that there is no funding.

Due to lack of staff, it is difficult to meet resident's needs. This results in a program that is not very therapeutic and resident's are bored all the time. YCCs are usually not informed of resident's clinical issues, nor are there team meetings to process residents through a clinical mindset. Instead, team meetings are used to give team members feedback and be informed of the many changes to the program's structure and rules.

The hours are long and staff end up staying overtime to get paperwork done (which is impossible to get done while on the floor with the residents). Usually staff are unable to take a break and there is no breakroom for staff either. Generally while on the job, I encountered a lot of disrespect from the residents. Management expects a lot from line staff and there is little acknowledgement
more... for the difficult work they do.

Use of benefits such as sick time and vacation time does not kick in until after you have been with the company for 6 months. If you need to take time off before those 6 months hit, you won't get paid. There are no personal days, or what I like to call "mental health days." Self care does not seem to be valued and the mental wellbeing of staff does not matter. Also, since this facility is open 24/7, YCCs have to work during holidays.
