Salary: Hourly, commensurate with experience and skills

Organization Summary: The Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy, founded in 1988, is a nonprofit organization whose mission is the preservation of open space and restoration of habitat on the greater Palos Verdes Peninsula for the education and enjoyment of all.

Position Summary: This position reports to the Education Director, performs a variety of duties primarily related to the George F Canyon and White Point Nature Centers and trail sites: helps to prepare and maintain a variety of records and reports as it pertains to the nature center, programming, trail and gift shop. Must be able to execute tasks with efficient timing and work independently.

Type: Part time, hourly, works mostly Wednesday, Friday-Sunday, and occasional other weekdays. A typical two week pay period will accumulate 30-40 hours of work. The White Point Nature Education Center is open Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday each week. George F Canyon Nature Center is open Friday through Sunday, while some special events occur on other days.


  • Develop and implement nature center programming
  • Operate the center, acting as receptionist, and visitor in-take and reference source for volunteers
  • Schedule, plan and lead hikes, school groups, scouts, birthdays and private parties. Have all necessary supplies, crafts and paperwork in order
  • Preparation and maintenance of records, files and lists related to the operation of the center, inventory, and visitor records, and communicate these regularly with Education Director
  • Maintain a comprehensive and updated knowledge of the local habitat, natural history and current PVPLC information in order to lead scheduled nature hikes on the preserve and interpret nature center exhibits inside
  • Maintain clean and inviting presentation inside the Nature Center, as well as the immediate areas outside the doors, and keeping information kiosk neat and current
  • Maintain gift-shop merchandise inventory including stocking the floor
  • Take in cash sales and tour fees
  • Train new volunteers and cultivate returning volunteers
  • Report any observed graffiti, trail hazards, vegetation overgrowth on trail, or trail maintenance needs to Education Director and partners City of Rolling Hills Estates and City of Los Angeles
  • Operate a computer workstation utilizing word processing and other software as required
  • Conduct live animal care at George F Canyon Nature Center
  • Assist with maintenance of Native Plant Demonstration Garden adjacent to nature centers
  • Staff outreach events representing PVPLC, including monthly nature walks and other PVPLC events and partnering events, and maintain necessary outreach materials
  • Willingness to work at both nature centers


  • Basic knowledge of southern California native flora and fauna, and interest for further learning on local natural history and skills development
  • Excellent time management skills
  • The ability to handle multiple tasks and programming effectively under pressure
  • Have the physical ability required to lead and supervise a 2+ mile hike on an unpaved, graded surface with groups of varying ages and abilities
  • Some heavy lifting involved; 20-30lbs
  • Ability to implement, manage, and model excellent risk management to insure the safety of program participants
  • Working knowledge of basic computer programs and applications: MS office, Google Calendar and Gmail
  • Must have reliable transportation to and from various jobsites throughout PVPLCā€™s service area

Desired Skills:

  • An interest and background in recreation and/ or the natural sciences, and the desire to share this knowledge with all age groups is important
  • NAI Certified Interpretive Guide preferred, or at least 1 year of experience in interpretation and/ or leading educational programming and hikes
  • Flexibility in work schedule which includes afternoons, some evenings and weekends, very important.
  • Good speaking and communication skills, ability to draw from engagement techniques
  • Friendly with the public, works well in a team and independently
