About PAML

Pathology Associates Medical Laboratories (PAML) is heading for the high road as a leading independent laboratory services provider in the Northwest. The company offers a full range of laboratory tests, from basic blood tests to specialized esoteric tests, including molecular diagnostics. The company serves hospitals and medical clinics in states including – more... California, Idaho, Montana, Oregon, Utah, and Washington. It operates a full-service reference laboratory in Spokane, as well as several ancillary facilities. It also works through joint ventures and on-site lab partnerships with hospitals. Founded in 1957, the company is a subsidiary of Providence Health & Services.

The company has launched itself on a growth path towards becoming a national pathology provider, primarily by forming new hospital partnerships. In 2009 parent Providence Health sold a 25% stake in PAML to Catholic Health Initiatives (CHI), which operates in 18 states, for about $37 million. The deal aided the company's expansion strategy by creating a platform for PAML to begin providing services to some of CHI's facilities.

Not one to drag its feet, in 2010 the company expanded its operations into Colorado by forming a joint venture, Colorado Laboratory Services, with CHI affiliate Centura Health. The venture provides basic hospital-based laboratory services for about a dozen Centura facilities in the state, while sending more complex lab samples to PAML's Spokane center. Also in 2010 the company formed a partnership (California Laboratory Associates) with three Providence Health hospitals in California to expand its operations in that state.

The arrangements are similar to PAML's existing ventures, which include PacLab Network Laboratories (operated with several Seattle-area hospitals) and Tri-Cities Laboratory (operated with several Boise, Idaho, health care facilities). – less
