A Peace Corps Response Volunteer (PCRV) is needed to serve as an Archaeology and Tourism Specialist for PADECOMSM (Asociación de Patronato para el Desarrollo de las Comunidades de Morazán y San Miguel). The community of Perquín is seeking an archaeologist or an expert with extensive archaeological training to complement a tourism project currently in progress. The aim of the tourism project is to rescue and preserve the historical and cultural patrimony (ca. 1000 BC–present) of the Lenca people native to the region surrounding Perquín. An important part of this process will be the identification and exploration of Lenca archaeological sites in the Perquín area. During the project the PCRV would transfer his/her knowledge and skills—among them recognizing, protecting, investigating and excavating sites—to Salvadoran counterparts, and together they would develop a work plan that would allow the Salvadoran team to continue with the project following the PCRV’s one-year stay in Morazán.

An Archaeologist and Tourism specialist with advanced Spanish and experienced in archaeology, training and field supervisory skills is needed to create an work with a Salvadoran team to explore sites, train team members and develop a tourism framework based on the discoveries. The PCRV and local counterparts will identify and systematically explore local sites with vestiges of the presence of a pre-Colonial Lenca population. Together they will report their findings locally and internationally to promote visitation and gain access to funding mechanisms for future research. The goal of this assignment is to contribute to the development of a strategic plan for the conservation and improvement of archaeological, natural and cultural resources in the area and thereby to provide a sustainable base for tourism in the area based off the findings from sites of the native Lenca people.

Mandatory Requirements:

-Advanced degree in Archaeology, Anthropology or related field preferred

-Advance level of Spanish

-Minimum of 2 years of experience or advanced study in archaeology

-Experience in adult education and training

-Strong field supervisory skills

-Knowledge of and experience with GIS and GPS preferred
