Charge Nurse, Saint Petersburg, FL - February 22, 2017
Due to the nature of psychiatry, it is a dangerous work place involving staff getting attacked by clients. Understaffing is constant issue to the point that staff and client safety is compromised. I have avoided many attacks by clients through quick reflexes. Although the staff is extremely overworked and underpaid, they always have each others' backs in providing protection of each other and vulnerable clients. Funds were always very limited to a point the staff has had to leave the unit and spend their own money to provide clients with basic needs like soap to bathe with. The hardest part of the job was enduring the verbal and physical abuse inflicted upon by mental patients but the most enjoyable part of the job was seeing their gratitude to the staff when they become stabilized and recognized our efforts.
