Peon (Former Employee), Idontwannagetfiredyet, Hell – May 7, 2013
Pros: flexible hours and great co-workers
Cons: everything else
Where to begin.. horrible job. PSP will squeeze the sweat and blood from you and give nothing in return. Raises are non existent since a hostile corporate takeover occurred, leaving the store extremely understaffed/underpaid. You have ZERO sick days, ZERO Vacation days, nothing, you get written up and eventually fired for calling in instead. This company – more... will waste its money hiring private firms to spy on its employees like the gestapo, but they wont spend an extra dime on payroll in order to give proper customer service. This company expects you to be an expert on every animal and every product they push but they don't want to pay you accordingly with your expertise and hard work. PSP's idea of training includes sending down training sheets from corporate that literally talk to you like you are a dog (I'm completely serious), it's the most degrading, idiotic thing I have ever seen. They expect you to put your tasks on hold to go above and beyond in sales, yet they do not pay a dime in commission. There has been a black mold problem at the store for years that has been ignored and as others have stated, basic OSHA codes are not followed (fire extinguishers were years past expiration). Assistant managers are often coerced out of taking a lunch so they can be milked for more off the clock work. Both assistant and store managers are expected to work (sometimes up to 15 hours a week!) past 40 hours with no extra pay. Corporate has gotten out of control, this chain was a thousand times better as a franchise, now they are 1000% about profits at whatever cost to the well being of their employees and customers alike. I have never worked for a company with such a high turnover rate and so little compassion for its employees. Despicable – less

It is a flexible, secure job but no room for advancement. The people that I worked with are great, but I wish in all of the time the I spent there I would have been able to advance more in my pay and standing.

The warehouse struggles to get on track.
Supervisor (Former Employee), Seymour, IN – April 26, 2013
Pros: pay
Cons: to little structure
I have worked for this company for 8 months and I feel like very little ground has been made to make it a better environment for the employees. Numerous schedule changes and a high turnover rate creates a tough work environment. A system that can do much more is in use but very little training on it causes many issues that are blamed on the associates. – more... The pay is good but cannot make up for the lack a great work environment. – less

better management is key
part-time (Former Employee), AL – April 25, 2013
With the exception of the co-manager, the store at which I worked severely lacked managerial initiative to cut bad employee behavior in the bud. The managers save for that one have a lazy hands-off approach, and one is outright disrespectful and inappropriate, even with the store director, who does nothing to discourage this behavior (nor does the district – more... manager, despite complaints from employees and customers alike). Following through on disciplinary actions almost never happens, setting an example of "oh well--who cares?" attitude throughout the store.

The company does not offer part-time benefits and makes it difficult to advance to management. It's a great job for a high school student or if you are in college working during breaks, and I am sure with better management my experience would have been much smoother. As a customer, many employees try to go above and beyond but working skeleton crew shifts put a strain on employees that customers can easily read. – less

Great coworkers and comany unity.
Cashier (Former Employee), Naperville, IL – April 4, 2013
Pros: friendly co workers, same schedule, fun enviroment
Cons: sometimes understaffed resulting in no break
My work consisted of counting down the register before placing it in the terminal. I would greet customers, help with issues, consult and make recomendations answer all phone calls, give returns and accept different forms of payment. The end of the shift would consist of ''facing'' the store, sometimes cleaning the dog wash or other things needing cleaning – more... in the store. The managment was good and friendly. The whole store had a good bond and established a fun work enviroment. The most enjoyable part of the job was socializing with the animals, going out of my way to help customers and seeing returning customers. The most difficult part of the job was when the store was empty and having to stand at the register with absolutely nothing to do. – less

Management is very understanding and flexible to help working parents. Would have been nice to have benefits but when working with a group of good people it makes it not so bad.

Absolutely mediocre to terrible in nearly every way
Something (Current Employee), Idontwanttogetfired, SW – March 5, 2013
Pros: mutable schedules, fun coworkers, understanding managers
Cons: everything else
This company absolutely works on the concept that an employee is a cog in a machine that is easily replaced.

Every employee is expected to be an expert on animal care and product knowledge, while the company does literally nothing to train them in these areas.

The customer service, *ahem* neighbor engagement policy includes such concepts as "asking – more... a neighbor to buy an item" and "attempt conversation with every passing neighbor" to the point of customer harassment.

OSHA safety standards are ignored at the corporate level, and animal care is untrained and based on appearances rather than animal health and well-being.

Raises are nonexistent, dental care is average and medical care is awful. This is essentially a minimum-wage job with simple work, but no room for advancement and it requires maximum effort of employees to avoid service-related write-ups.

Although the official policy is "work can wait, neighbors won't" employees can still get in trouble for stock-related issues.

Company owned distribution can't deliver on time, let alone on the right day, so hour cuts hurts performance immensely. Hours are low and with seniority being essentially meaningless, there are no guarantees to anyone.

PROS? Stock work/cashier work is fairly simple. Many managers are smart enough to "tweak" corporate requirements so that they actually work and keep customers happy. Days off, multiple jobs, and schooling are easy to coordinate with scheduling. The job tends to attract like-minded weirdos so it's easy to get along with your co-workers. Employees are kept in the loop on reasons behind managerial/corporate decisions so situations are much more easily resolved than they would be otherwise. – less

Animal keeper, Cashier, Stocker, and Maintenance (Current Employee), Chicago, IL – February 15, 2013
Pros: playing with animals
Cons: workers that are miserable
i love my job, i clean animals all day, help people figure things out about pets and things they need.i've learn you can't please everyone and going above and beyond in this company gets you no where, the hardest part of the job is when customers pets dont make it, and the miserable workers that bring the vibe down, working with the guys in the stock – more... room is always fun with they can see what a woman can do just the same as them and sometimes more. – less

Productve, Fun, Learning Workplace
Shift Manager (Current Employee), Lyndhurst, OH – January 27, 2013
Pros: good place for advancement
Cons: there isnt a break room for employees
A typical day is handling customer complaints, questions and comments. Also handling any returns, store credits, discounts, counting down cashier tills, and balancing the safe. With 7 years with the company and I have learned how to be in each department, working right under the store manager I have learned how to order product, make signs, price match, – more... build displays using planograms, put out stock. Everyone at PSP works as a team, to help maintain good customer service, assure quality with our products, and making sure each customer is satisfied and will return. The most hardest part of the job is trying to meet each customers needs when we are short staffed and really busy. The most enjoyable part of the job is the excellent customer service I provide everyday, and the customer telling me they are happy they came to me for help. – less

A normal Place to work in retail
Stocker/ Customer Service (Former Employee), West Seneca, NY – January 25, 2013
Pros: payed breaks
My typical day involved the rotation of stock and the handling and sale of animals. I learned that if you put in a decent amount of effort your shift would go smoothly and there wouldn't be any problems with management. Management was hard to get a read on because they were constantly being moved to different stores. The hardest park of the job had – more... to be stock rotation purely because of the physical labor involved. I enjoyed the rotation however because I like being active at work. – less
