Grooming Assistant (Former Employee), National City, CAOctober 22, 2014
Pros: 20% employee discount
Cons: hostile work environment
was made to work through breaks frequently, forced to sneak extra services into salon prices even if dog didn't need them. If we refused, we were threatened with losing our job or getting a write up. Opportunities were denied for promotions. Most coworkers were really nice. Hundreds of pounds of dog and cat food are purposely thrown in the garbage because – more... manager refuses to donate the food to any rescues, ripped bags, etc. – less

High traffic, never stop learning
Dog and Cat Department Manager (Former Employee), Orange, CAOctober 22, 2014
Able to delegate tasks to teams in order to provide great customer service. Learned to multi-task and still abel to achieve end goal of high sales. Provide educational service to all customers in order to ensure that customers are providing all basic needs to their pets.
Hardest part of the job is trying to fit in all you need to do and wish to in one – more... day, had to learn to be able to assign priorities. The most enjoyable part of my job was able to interact not only with customers but also the pets. – less

An "Okay" Pet Store
Cashier (Former Employee), Hartsdale, NYOctober 22, 2014
A typical day at work consisted of working at a cash register and maintaining the sales floor. I learned how to process materials and how to care for a few domesticated animals. Management wasn't very organized and almost always difficulties formulating the work schedules for the employees. The hardest part of the job was fulfilling customer requests – more... when the work team didn't work together. – less

No incentive for employees
Manager (Former Employee), New JerseyOctober 18, 2014
Pros: animals.
Cons: long hours, understaffed.
You are expected to do a lot, but are given very little. Tiny staffs have to maintain large numbers, very hard to achieve sales goals. Little financial incentive.

Pets and drama
Canine Instructor (Former Employee), Mankato, MNOctober 17, 2014
Pros: meeting pets
Cons: too much drama from co-workers
I would walk around the store educating pet parents on proper pet care for a variety of pets. As a dog trainer, I would assist dog owners on how to train their dog. The management was poor. They were not helpful and many times would not listen. Co-workers always talked about one another behind their back to other co-workers and to customers. the hardest – more... part of the job was dealing with the lies and rumors and drama from co-workers. I did enjoy meeting many pets and getting to know the regulars. – less

Team Member/Cashier (Former Employee), Yuba City, CAOctober 7, 2014
Pros: everybody was really kind to me
Cons: getting carts
A typical day at work I would go back to the stock and see which tasks needed to be completed and go complete those tasks. I would also clean the animal cages that needed to be cleaned and take out pets for customers. What I learned there the most was where all of the merchandise goes. The management was outstanding I always knew what I needed to do – more... and when I needed to get it done. I really enjoyed working with my co-workers because they were all nice to me and they were really helpful to me when I needed help. The hardest part of the job was cleaning the animal cages because you would have to move the animals and some of them did not cooperate and it made my job more difficult. The most enjoyable part of my job was coming to work and seeing my co-workers everyday. – less

Working with animals
Cashier/Customer Service (Former Employee), Chester, VAOctober 7, 2014
Pros: working with animals
Cons: getting hours cut back every week
At typical day at work can be very fun and energetic. Being able to learn about animals an getting to take care of them was very exciting. Management was great because they seemed to be very cool and relaxed people to work for. My co-workers were always there for me when ever I needed something or even if I needed a day off of work. The hardest part – more... of the job was capturing the animals such as snakes from the cages if a customer wanted one of them to take home. The most enjoyable part of the job again was the animals because being around them always kept me going. – less
