This company hopes peckish pizza partisans will pick its pepperoni pie. Peter Piper operates and franchises more than 135 pizza parlors in five Southwestern states and in Mexico. The restaurants serve a variety of pizza styles and toppings along with such items as breadsticks, chicken wings, and salads. The family-friendly chain also offers game rooms and play areas for youngsters. Most locations offer delivery service as well as dine-in seating. About 35 of the restaurants are company-owned, while the rest are franchised. Started in 1973, Peter Piper is owned by private equity firm ACON Investments.
Washington, DC-based ACON acquired the pizza chain from investment firms Venture West Group and Madison Dearborn Partners in 2007. With the infusion of new capital, the company invested in updating some of its older locations and its upgrading its menu. It has also focused on expanding the size of the chain by opening new company-owned stores.
Joseph Luongo, Jr. has been CEO since 2008. Luongo previously headed the international operations of FedEx Kinko's (now FedEx Office and Print Services).
