Fun place to work
Front Desk Receptionist (Current Employee), Modesto, CA – May 16, 2013
Pros: free gym membership
Cons: short work days
A typical day at work is checking members in, answering the phone, cleaning assigned workout sections as well as locker rooms. I have learned a lot of new techniques such as a proper way to answer the phones as well as managing the cleanliness of the gym. My management is really great and professional, they also make the job fun and exciting. My co-workers – more... and I do a great job at working together as a team. The hardest part sometimes is finding work to do when the assigned work is done especially when the foot traffic is slow. The most enjoyable part of my job is that I get one on one customer service time with the members as well as being able to make it a great work environment for me and my co-workers. – less

Not one day was the same exciting work atmosphere.
Manager (Current Employee), Bronx, NY – May 7, 2013
Pros: 401k
Cons: 30 minute lunch for a 11 hour work day and no dental
Dealing with irate customers in a proper manor, returning phone calls front the night before. Next would be my walk around making sure every machine is clean and in good working order, if not log the serial numbers down send email out to maintenance/corporate office and CEO'S of company. Check all close-outs from the night before and do bank deposit – more... as well as running daily reports. As far as my staff they all had an upbeat personality made all my members feel welcomed. I really did enjoy the interaction with all of the members and all the different personality i would encounter on a daily bases. As far as my hardest part of the day would have to me dealing with the irate members... – less

Front Desk Attendant (Current Employee), Lafayette, LA – May 4, 2013
Pros: pay/easy going job
Cons: overnight work
Fun place to work, love all my employees as well as my manager. Hardest part of the job are the hours because it is an overnight position. Kind of throws the balance of everything off. I enjoyed being able to interact with so many different people and help members when needed. And the pay was nice.

Customer Service and Fitness Trainer (Former Employee), Milwaukee, WI – April 29, 2013
Pros: get to help people and teach them new things
Cons: not a lot of hours and no advancement
My typical day is that I would check my schedule to see what clients I had coming in. Then get my paper work ready for them sit and talk to them find out how they were doing. And take them through their work out program and made sure they never over did it on their routine.I have learned that your going to meet all walks of lifes with different ablities.As – more... for the mangement it was okay and the co-workers.The hardest part of my day is when a client wouldn't show up or even call to let me know that they weren't coming. The best part of the day is when I got to help my clients and work with on new programs and watch them go through that transform. – less

Its a fun, comfortable environment to work, with co-workers that have a positive attitude.
Front Desk Sales (Former Employee), Chatham – April 26, 2013
Pros: friendly, comfortable work environment, and free gym membership
Cons: no breaks but your 30 min lunch, and no health benefits or insurance
Your day stays rather busy, taking care of customers as they walk in, whether it be home gym members or visiting gym members coming to enjoy the facility. If it's not handling gym members' check-ins, your handling brand new sign-ups, upgrading/downgrading, reinstating, canceling, transferring members, or taking care of balances. Doing customer service – more... there for about a year and going on 4 months I've learned how to build friendly relationships with customers, staying positive and friendly while still being under pressure and being able to manage a customer's circumstance even in the midst of tense moments. Planet Fitness is a great place to learn to create multiple projects while still accomplishing that is being asked of you. Management there is great and are very well experienced there and know how to value a good employee when seeing one. Co-workers know how to work as a team and not as an individual in the middle of crunch time to get what ever major task is at hand. The hardest part of the job I would have to say is not being able to satisfy a member no matter how much effort you've put into meeting their need. While at the same time, seeing the enjoyment of a member when they've come to acknowledgement that you've remembered them and their conversations, is an amazing feeling. – less

Not worth your effort
Member Services Associate (Former Employee), Derry, NH – April 24, 2013
Pros: free gym membership
Cons: poor management, no breaks, poor salary, unsanitary conditions
I had worked out at planet fitness for a few months and had recently quit one of my other jobs so I decided to apply. The company only cares about your monthly sales, which I found to be a little odd considering we don't get any sort of commission based on member joins. Each employee is responsible for about 30 pieces of equipment to clean on a daily – more... basis. Managers also have equipment to clean but they never do it. My manager literally spent at least an hour every day on the phone talking to her boyfriend at the front desk.

The regional managers come around once a month to critique the club, and they came in as she was on the phone with her boyfriend! Needless to say she got yelled at. The weekend and weekday staff don't work together to clean things, so on Monday mornings, the locker rooms would be absolutely filthy. Hard work isn't rewarded, and laziness isn't punished, leaving no motivation to the employees to do their jobs.

You get no extra hourly rate for working holidays, are expected to do various janitorial duties even though there are daily cleaners hired, and have no breaks. Your break is, according to the manager, whenever the front desk isn't busy, even though you're told to do walk-arounds or clean your equipment when it's not busy.

In short, this job was a joke. The manager didn't care, so hard-working employees such as myself went unnoticed. I put my two weeks notice in, and my membership was cancelled, even though other employees who left under the previous manager still had complementary memberships. If you work here, expect to be paid very little for the amount of nonsense you have to deal with in the form of disgusting equipment/bathrooms and rude customers. I now work out at a different planet fitness where there aren't 6 foot high piles of boxes in the front desk area and the manager is available to talk. – less

Fun Workplace
Front Desk Staff (Former Employee), Houston, TX – April 19, 2013
Pros: good working conditions, upbeat and fun environment
Cons: bad hours, unprofessional manager
My co-workers were friendly and we all got along. Most enjoyable part of the job was signing people up for a membership. Hardest part was having to unclog toilets occasionally. Management was decent until they promoted someone who was not very fit for the position.

Member Services (Former Employee), Pittston, PA – April 15, 2013
Pros: being a positive person that helps obtain fitness goals.
Cons: unruly customers
My job required me to monitor the operation and maintenance of gym equipment and the facility.Greet customers with professional communication and customer service skills. Assist customers who phone in with any questions or concerns. Perform basic clerical and administrative tasks. Process necessary paperwork and provide basic bookkeeping procedures. – more... Maintain a respectable and professional relationship with members and associates. I've learned great communication skills, how to maintain a healthy lifestyle through fitness and nutrition. – less

A quiet workplace while working overnight.
Overnight Gym Associate (Current Employee), Rocky Point, NY – April 9, 2013
I work overnight here at Planet Fitness and my job is to supervise the gym during my hours and maintain a safe and clean workout environment. I learned how to sharpen up my customer service skills and how to react with the people even better then i did before. The management could be better. My co-workers for the most part are all good people but some – more... start to get too comfortable and slack more then others. The most enjoyable part of the job would be the fact that i work overnight and its a more fun atmosphere. – less

Not secure and not enjoyable
Front Desk (Current Employee), Hoboken, NJ – April 3, 2013
Pros: old management hired me, because they recognized talent.
Cons: new management fired me, because i had school two days a week. and wasnt available everyday.
I worked here for eight months and worked very hard. After corporate took over, they required everyone to be available to work everyday of the week. I am a full time college student, and go to school two days a week. Because I wasn't available those two days, I was let go. This is unprofessional and disloyal to employees.

Great staff, unrealistic expectations
Overnight Data Entry/Night Manager (Current Employee), Victor, NY – April 2, 2013
Pros: overnight shift gives you certain freedoms, more independence.
Cons: no benefits, no personal days.
The people that work here are great. I get along with everyone here even though i rarely see them as I work overnight. I wouldn't mind doing this job as a part-time gig. Definitely not something to make a career out of. Management is fine whenever there is a manager. In my 2 years here I have seen 6 different managers. My biggest complaint would have – more... to be with corporate. They seem to have these unrealistic expectations that the gym has to be spotless. It's a gym, people sweat, things will get dirty. We do our best to keep it clean but short of following every member around, it's impossible. At least my co-workers are united in that we're all in the same boat, let's make the best of it. – less

Data Entry Specialist (Former Employee), Natick, MA – March 30, 2013
Pros: work hours, 5am to 1pm, avoiding traffic.
Cons: no job security and low wages.
Typical day involved performing my morning duties accurately and catering to the manager. I learned that promotions don't automatically mean a raise.

Front Desk Receptionist- Duties (Former Employee), San Antonio, TX – March 28, 2013
Pros: free membership, good healthcare/dental plan, good pay great benefits
Cons: 24 hour facilities make for having to work overnight at times.
Working at Planet Fitness I interacted with many different types of people. It was an amazing place to gain experience in customer service, accounting, office work, janitorial work and sales. The management always was on point and corrected when needed. All of my co-workers were amazing to work with, everyone had a sense to help others. The hardest – more... part of this job was just having to balance it all out. Once the first shift got it started, it was all easy. I enjoyed working here mostly because of the people that I met and was able to help. – less
