About PMHCC

The Philadelphia Mental Health Care Corporation (PMHCC), a not-for-profit organization, was established in 1987 by the City of Philadelphia in order to implement a major grant from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation's Program for Chronic Mental Illness. One of nine national grants, the funding was to assist the Philadelphia Office of Mental Health – more... (OMH) realize its vision for a unified mental health system which provided affordable housing, effective case management, and a broad range of psychosocial and vocational programs for people with mental illness.
Over the years PMHCC's activities and responsibilities have changed and evolved as the mental health system accomplished many of its initial goals. The organization's primary role, however, has remained unchanged: to support and assist the Philadelphia Department of Public Health (PDPH) and its behavioral health offices in efforts to create a comprehensive, effective, and consumer responsive behavioral health system.
Today, PMHCC makes a major contribution to Philadelphia's behavioral health and mental retardation system by serving as an umbrella organization for special programs and initiatives and providing critical administrative services to these entities. At the request of the City, it now also supports mental retardation and substance abuse programs in addition to mental health programs.
