POSITION GUIDELINE – SHIFT SUPERVISOR

The purpose of this operation procedure is to establish the job requirements, working conditions, basic functions, reporting relationship, and duties of the Shift Supervisor.

1.) The basic function of the Shift Supervisor is to carry out supervisory responsibilities according to company policy and applicable laws. These responsibilities would include training, monitoring, assigning, and directing work: appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; and addressing and resolving complaints.

2.) The Shift Supervisor reports to the Operations Manager.

3.) The Shift Supervisors are responsible for the following functions:

a) Assigning of operators to specific presses
b) Inspection of products for conformance to specifications.
c) Review and adjust production personnel to ensure the on-time completion of work.
d) Interviewing and hiring of employees, as applicable.
e) Disciplining and rewarding of employees
f) Appraisal and evaluation of employees
g) Ensure the accurate and complete recording of data on production sheets
h) Ensure that production operators assigned to them understand the fundamentals of running the
production press
i) Verifying job travelers are correct and in place
j) Verify that products being produce conform to product manuals
k) Review of production schedule with Lead Operators, Mold Techs, and Material Handlers to keep them
informed of any changes that may be taking place
l) Ensure that production operators have the appropriate tools to perform the job requirements
m) Ensure that all quality assurance materials, such as samples, fixtures and gages, are at the workstation
prior to job startup
n) Ensure that all required assembly or secondary operation equipment are in place
o) Ensure proper documentation is in place for operator receipt of tools
p) Ensure that all tools are turned in by the employee upon separation
q) Ensure that the raw materials at each workstation are the proper ones for the job and that sufficient
quantities are on hand
r) Meet with Operations Manager to ensure shifts productivity and take steps to improve when needed
s) Report any repairs needed to tools, machines, or molds
t) Report any quality or production issues
u) Recommend measures to improve efficiencies and production methods, equipment performance, and quality
v) Ensure that all personnel are crossed-trained to operate all production machinery, regardless of size
w) Discuss defective and unacceptable material or products with appropriate personnel and take
corrective action
x) Ensure that all employees are following all appropriate safety rules and regulations on site
y) Properly fill out and turn in any documentation or reports as required.

4.) Shift supervisors must have the following skills:

a) Ability to develop and maintain a good working relationship with fellow employees and other departments
b) Ability to recognize and deal with priorities
c) Exhibit organizational skills
d) Ability to multi-task
e) Ability to calculate such factors as: types and quantities of items produced, materials used, amount of scrap, rate of defects and worker or department productivity rates
