Helping in the home
Private Duty Home Health Aide (Current Employee), Parkville, MD –
Pros: some down time, flexible hours, friendly
Cons: no benefits, lack of job security, sometimes too much down time
My current job is working with an elderly woman who has severe dementia. While on duty, I prepare meals and medications. In addition, I oversee the general care of my client while staying at their house.

A rewarding career.
HHA/Hospice (Former Employee), Leominster, MA –
Pros: very rewarding career, make own hours, no "politics"
Cons: need contacts to acquire more cases, lack of work
I love private duty because you get the one on one experience with your patient. I also enjoy developing a bond with the patient that is very special. There is nothing more rewarding than making a difference in someones life. Honestly, if I knew more people looking for private duty this would be the career for me.

Exceptional people to work for; always polite, kind, and considerate.
State of Florida Certified Nurse Assistant (Current Employee), Spring Hill, FL –
Pros: going out to eat!
Cons: dealing with a wound that won't heal.
I have been with the same family for 12 years. I have had a wealth of experience as they have been ill and well intermittently. I have sadly experienced the decline and ultimate death of one of the family members I cared for. She was an interesting woman and suffered from the results from several strokes among other problems. She and her husband traveled – more...  all over the world and had many delightful stories to share. I also provide care for her husband who just turned 95 years old. He is a very considerate man and always uses "please" and "thank you." We have been to many doctor appointments and they have had numerous tests. I really enjoy conversing with the doctors, since I feel very comfortable with them and I understand a lot of their medical jargon. I manage many tasks, such as accounts payable, do banking and manage all the paperwork over the years. I invented a convenient small list of current medications my patient takes so when visiting a new facility and filling out paperwork, which I also do, it is easy to give the small list to the medical assistant to copy. I manage the workers who come to the house, wanted and unwanted! My co-workers are 2 very nice gals who take other shifts than mine. The hardest part of the job is separating myself from the familiarity of the family and changing into a serious business professional when necessary, which has been quite often lately. The most enjoyable part of the job is hearing the many stories from my patient's military days and travels. I also enjoy conversing with the doctors at the many facilities we visit. – less
