Project One Inc

Project One's mission is to produce an ongoing series of public art events and initiatives in and around Newport RI. We stage a series of exhibitions and initiatives each year, working closely with the city, local businesses, utilities companies, artists, students and volunteers - creatively and collaboratively - to make Newport RI the kind of place – more... we want it to be. Our goal is to bring artwork out of institutions and into the daily life of our city. Our purpose is to demonstrate that our city's artistic culture is vibrant, ongoing, and accessible to all. We believe that public art reminds us that creativity, extraordinary people and inspirational events are part of our daily lives.

Project One is an all-volunteer organization formed in the winter of 1997. Our first event was THE BANNERS in spring, 1998. It consisted of 70 artist-created banners hung from light poles in downtown Newport. Our second event was the creation of a single large-scale collaborative sculpture as part of the Maritime Arts Festival. In the fall of that year, we debuted our outdoor sculpture festival Wind Sea Sky, presenting14 large-scale sculptures on Easton's Beach.

Spring 1999 saw THE BANNERS expand to 120 banners. For the Maritime Arts Festival that year we installed another large-scale collaborative sculpture entitled "Waves", a wind driven surface of layered plastic. In the summer we staged The Broadway Banners, our most collaborative undertaking to that point, involving numerous civic organizations. Wind Sea Sky1999 included 15 pieces. Over the winter, Project One was awarded the Dorothy Mullen Arts and Humanities Award by the National Recreation and Parks Association as the most innovative and effective Arts and Humanities program in a city with a population between 25,000 and 75,000 anywhere in America.

2000 saw a hiatus in the banner project due to low funds and construction at 2 critical sites, but Wind Sea Sky 2000, which grew to include 20 sculptures, was incorporated into the Convergence 2000 International Arts Festival and was supported by a generous, unsolicited grant from the Prism Foundation. The Banners 2001 was made possible by our first grant for the Rhode Island State Council on the Arts.

Between 2001 and 2003, Wind Sea Sky continued to grow, including over 30 artworks each year, becoming a regionally recognized event featured in Art In New England, visited by school groups, and funded by a variety of business, individual, foundation, and municipal sources. During this time we also launched two new initiatives, The Living City and the Project One nomadic Art*o*Mat.

Our events remain entirely volunteer-managed and wholely supported by community contributions. We depend on our community for volunteers, funding, artwork and good ideas. Join us and get involved with Project One. – lessMore from ZoomInfo »
