Glad I had a positive impact on most of them ☺
Page/ Receptionist (Former Employee) – Astoria, NY – May 22, 2016
Worked seven years in the role of a part time Page/ Receptionist in the Steinway Adult Learning Center, and enjoyed being able to help students learn during their first experience in the Center. In this position, tracked student hours and activity, update students appointment, inputting and gathering information for quarterly and annually reporting, assisted students with their homework and supervised them with their programs on the computer for the very first time, etc. It was a great experience, left this job for better education.
VOLUNTEER (Current Employee) – Arverne – September 14, 2015
A typical day in Queens Library typically includes answering a lot of phones for inquiring minds. I learned a lot from this environment but the biggest thing it taught me was patience. Management was very friendly and co-workers where like family. The hardest part of the job was pressuring myself to step outside of my comfort zone when it came to creativity. The most enjoyable part of the job was the sense of fulfillment after I satisfied each customer.
Field Clerk (Former Employee) – Elmhurst, NY – January 21, 2016
The atmosphere is great, I love my boss, she was kind and energic for us to team to do the project. I have learned team work and typical individual's with students to work. My co-workers are great and are really fun. There is not hardest part of this job at all. it is simply easiest job.
Page (Current Employee) – East Elmhurst, NY – December 2, 2014
I usually arrive and get straight to work. I usually organize anything that is misplaced first and then go back and shelve anything that was returned the day before and prior to me arriving. Management is excellent and I haven't faced any issues with customers. Me and my co-workers get along well and our day typically runs smoothly. The hardest part of the job would be covering for other people when they are not in that day. The most enjoyable part of the job is being able to interact with the customers and help them find whatever they need. During my time here, I have learned how to communicate with others; mainly customers and my supervisor. I also learned how to time myself so that I can get all my work done before the end of the day.

-A typical day at work is full of books to be shelved by a certain time. Cleaning up the books on the floor, left on tables, left on chairs, etc. Assisting customers when they cannot find something. -I learned that patience is a virtue. -Management is helpful. -My co-workers are simply just that: Co-workers. We all just try to get our work done. Do not really associate much. -The hardest part of the job is organizing because children always pull out the books. -The most enjoyable part of the job is seeing the children smile as you find them the book they were looking for.
Successful, diverse, and entertaining work environment where I learn everyday.
Page (Current Employee) – Queens, NY – October 20, 2013
I have a part time position at the Queens Library. From the beginning I got the opportunity to learn a lot about the job and it was the most enjoyable part. Every day I'm engaged with costumers, answering questions, referring them to appropriate staff, and helping them with the automatic self-check-out and self-check-in systems. Primarily I do; Maintenance of book stocks and displays. Shelving books and library materials. Helping children's librarian with codding new materials and labeling and linking new DVDs and magazines. I've had the great pleasure of working with excellent co-workers and managers so far, and it has contributed to our success serving hundreds of customers everyday.
A open and free environment full of knowledge and life lessons that I was able to learn from the customers that I helped.
Volunteer (Former Employee) – Ozone Park, NY – June 19, 2015
A regular day at work would consist of me restocking book shelves in the Dewey decimal system and DVD selves in alphabetical order. Sometimes I had created origami programs to bring Japanese culture to the small little world that is out workplace to show them the beauty in which a single piece of paper can create in a few folds. My supervisor instructed me the first 2 or 3 days to simply show me the process in which to do my job and also how the library operates so that I can work fluently and productively. My co-workers treated me like I was working them since day 1 of opening; they easily learned my first name which many people find hard to pronounce and we often make jokes that make slow days go by quicker and always put me in a good mood if I were to ever feel down. I say the hardest part of the job were the fights that occasionally broke out but were easy to fix. The most enjoyable part was making friends and learning more about the world from the customers that I was able to help and impress by fixing their personal laptops that they had trouble with.
Long lunch breaks, and Able to create my own activities for the children
Children's Librarian (Current Employee) – Jamaica, NY – November 25, 2013
Queens Library is a great non profit organization. Customer Service is key for Queens Library. Working at the Queens Library I learned organization and interpersonal skills. Co-workers are encouraging and friendly. The hardest part of the job is continuing to come of with new and innovative ideas but it is a welcoming challenge. The most enjoyable part of my career are the smiles of my satisfied customers.
Librarian Assistant (Former Employee) – Corona, NY – July 15, 2012
Gave me something to do in the summer I was a first volunteer in the library was fun since a lot of the people talked spanish and I had to translate, keeping books organized, helping people out to check out books it was a self-service check out, after a while the lady I thought she was just my co-worker was very nice to offer me a job but I didn't know she was my manager liked my performance enjoyed having there was sad I had to leave to move to connecticut hardest part was moving book baskets filled up to the top at times had to push them to get the books in the right order but was fun to be with busy people even children
meeting new people, organizing books, helping around the enviorment.
Documentarian (Former Employee) – Jamaica, NY – July 25, 2015
The best aspect of this experience was to be the first to learn from subjects their stories in connection with their Queens neighborhood that through the interviewer's work is made public for future dissemination.
Develop own set of question in preparation for each interviewing event.
The amount of work that goes into documenting the information collected.
Library Assistant III (Former Employee) – Jamaica, NY – March 19, 2014
This is a great working environment for anyone who likes meeting a diversified group of people each day. I learned how to communicate with individuals from different ethnicity and backgrounds of all age groups. Co-workers were easy to get along with, and all of the managers I have worked with were very dedicated, not only to just daily working routines and managing the library efficiently but also to staff members. The most enjoyable part of my job was interacting with customers and patrons and making sure their needs were met.
Volunteer (Former Employee) – Ozone Park, NY – June 8, 2015
Most days I would be in an office checking the inventory. I learned how a business functions behind the counter. The co-workers were kind and provided great service to the customers. The hardest part of the job was repackaging materials. The most enjoyable part was the bookkeeping.
Clerical Assistant (Former Employee) – Jamaica, NY – May 22, 2015
My direct supervisor was good but the overall atmosphere in the office was tense. Members of the library's legal team did not like each other and I was caught in the middle. Now I work with the human resources department and I like it better there.
Working at Queens Library is absolutely fun and amazing
Assist the customers (Current Employee) – 40-20 Broadway, New York, Astoria – October 30, 2014
At Queens Library the typical day would be working with my co-workers and keep the customers happy. My job is to satisfy my customers therefore I would try every professional skills in order to make my customers happy. The environment at the library is very enjoyable, it is like waking up in your dream job. Everyone has smile on their faces and they would go beyond their limits to bring the smile on people's faces. It does not even feel that I am working because I feel that every staff members are like my family. However at times things get hard when it comes to taking care of the specific customers. There are many customers who does not like to be told about the policy and rules of the library, which makes it hard to face the obstacle. For that situation I would strictly tell one of the librarian, manager or supervisor to discuss about the problem. By taking up the job I have learned to manage my time, to be responsible, talk professionally, always have smile while you are at work. Nobody wants to see a dusky face when you are at a job. Moreover, the biggest skill that I have learned is that a person cannot addle their professional and personal life, the two kinds of life should stay at its place.
flexible time working, very understanding supervisor
