R+L Carriers wants to add your freight to its trucks. The company provides freight transportation and logistics services throughout the US, primarily operating as a less-than-truckload (LTL) carrier. (LTL carriers combine freight from multiple carriers into a single truckload.) Its R+L Global segment arranges for international freight to be shipped by air and sea. With more than 150 service centers, R+L Carriers offers service in all 50 states, as well as in Canada, the Dominican Republic, and Puerto Rico. Overall it operates a fleet of some 13,000 tractors and trailers. CEO Ralph Larry Roberts founded the family-owned company in 1965, starting with a single truck that was used to haul furniture.
The company is looking to bolster its business by increasing emphasis on services beyond LTL. In 2010 the company expanded its R+L Global Logistics unit with the addition of seven new facilities across the US. The facilities provide services such as air charters, expedited ground delivery, project management, and warehousing.
Over the years R+L Carriers has traditionally grown both organically and through acquisitions. The company has not, however, acquired a company since its 2009 purchase of Spirit Express Trucking, which gave R+L a strategic base in Denver. – less
