Evaluation of Acute isCHemic stroke, is a turnkey service that allows neurologists affiliated with major "Hub Hospitals" to remotely diagnose, evaluate and recommend treatment for stroke and other acute medical conditions from anywhere in the world using a web browser. REACH was designed by Dr. David C. Hess, Professor and Chairman of Neurology at the Medical College of Georgia (MCG), and other MCG Neurologists in Augusta, Georgia. Deep in the heart of the stroke belt of the United States, rural hospitals in Georgia were unable to provide stroke care to patients who were visiting their ERs because they had no neurologist on staff. These stroke patients were transferred to MCG for treatment, often too late to receive tissue plasminogen activator (tPA), a thrombolytic treatment that must be delivered within three hours of the onset of stroke. REACH eliminates the geographic penalty associated with treatment of acute ischemic strokes. Hospitals that wish to provide stroke care but do not have sufficient neurology staff can leverage REACH to request immediate consultation with remote neurologists affiliated with the Hub Hospital. Studies have shown that the sooner a stroke patient is treated after the onset of symptoms, the better his chances of recovery and prevention of long-term disability.
