RehabCare is a major provider of rehabilitation program management services to hospitals, nursing homes, assisted living centers, and other long-term care facilities in the US. It operates both inpatient and outpatient rehab units for its hospital clients and offers contract therapy services to nursing homes and assisted living facilities. Change in Company Type

Kindred Healthcare purchased RehabCare in 2011 through a nearly $1 billion cash, stock, and debt transaction. Kindred boosted its position significantly in the post-acute care market through the deal, and RehabCare gained the benefit of Kindred's broader financial and operational resources. In the face of health reform changes and troubled economic conditions, the companies aim to control costs, increase efficiencies, and expand future growth opportunities through the merger.

Following the transaction, Kindred merged its existing rehabilitation operations, which previously operated as Peoplefirst, into RehabCare, raising the number of rehab therapy contracts the company served from 1,250 to nearly 1,900.

Strategy

RehabCare formerly operated some 30 long-term acute care hospitals under the Triumph name, but in an effort to focus on its core rehab operations, those were transferred to Kindred after the acquisition.
