About Republic Parking System

Homeowners and businesses in 39 states in the US and Puerto Rico pledge allegiance to Republic Services and the trash collection for which it stands. The company is the second-largest nonhazardous waste management provider in the US, behind leader Waste Management, in terms of revenues and geographic coverage. Republic provides waste disposal services – more... for commercial, industrial, municipal, and residential customers through its network of 334 collection companies. The company owns or operates 191 solid waste landfills, 194 transfer stations, and 74 recycling centers. It also has 69 landfill-to-gas and two solar energy landfill cover operations.

Operations

To better address the local variables of the waste collection business, Republic organizes its operations into three regions. Each region is further divided into several operating areas, which provide collection, transfer, disposal, and recycling services. Regional and area managers are given considerable authority under the company's decentralized management structure. In 2012 the company restructured its field and corporate operations, consolidating field regions from four to three and areas from 28 to 20, relocating office space and reducing administrative staffing levels, in order to create more efficiencies.

Financial Analysis

In 2011 the company posted revenues of $8.2 billion, edging out its 2010 revenues of $8.1 billion by a little more than 1% due to slight increases in prices and fuel recovery fees. However, the company's net income that year of $589.2 million jumped 16% over the previous year, associated with a number of recoveries and other expenses that favorably impacted the company's results. Republic also did not incur any additional restructuring charges in 2011 related to its Allied Waste acquisition in 2008.

Strategy

Republic had grown by buying smaller waste management operations in its existing service areas and in new regions. Likely candidates included assets of municipalities that were privatizing their waste management services. Since swallowing the large national business of Allied Waste in 2008, the company has focused on growing organically by integrating and streamlining its operations to increase efficiency. It is also implementing higher pricing and investing in such growth strategies as recycling infrastructure, national accounts, and acquisitions.

Ownership

Republic's largest shareholder is Microsoft chairman Bill Gates, who owns about 18% of the company through his investment vehicle, Cascade Investment. – less
