ReputationDefender provides a virtual Sharpie for marking away insults posted on a Facebook wall. For a monthly fee, the company will search out information about you that's on the Internet and work to delete or minimize anything undesirable. That can include insults, inaccuracies, or even neutral information that has potential for misuse (such as phone numbers). The company's workhorse product, MyReputation, is one of the first services to offer online reputation management. ReputationDefender serves business executives, professionals, small and medium businesses, teachers, and anyone else whose reputation is a key component of their professional success.
Besides MyReputation, the company offers three other products for managing one's online reputation. MyChild helps parents protect their children's safety by searching for all information in the Internet about a child or teen. MyPrivacy enables clients to delete unwanted information themselves. And MyEdge allows clients to positively affect the results when their names are searched on Google, Yahoo, and other search engines. MyEdge clients create their own personal and professional profile and ReputationDefender then organizes the information in a way that makes it more likely to show up as the first results in a search of their names.
MyReputation and MyChild are available for about $15 a month while MyPrivacy lists for about $10 a month. MyEdge is available annually at three tiers of service for $99, $299, and $599. The company does not provide one-time-only service for addressing what people believe to be the only unfavorable item about them on the Internet, but it may provide that later.
When a client alerts ReputationDefender about objectionable material, the company goes into what it calls the Destroy assistance process. The tactics of this process include contacting the party hosting a site with derogatory information and negotiating for changes. ReputationDefender makes no guarantees about the success of such efforts, which includes everything up to legal action. If such action is needed, the company refers clients to law firms that have agreed to pre-negotiated rates.
The company does admit to limits in what it will accomplish for clients. Billing itself as a strong supporter of freedom of speech and the press, the service will not attempt to remove news articles or government records.
ReputationDefender was founded in 2006 and operates in more than 30 countries. The service is optimized for English-language Web sites, but it will also search in most other languages.
