Personal Support Professional (Former Employee), Cincinnati, OHMarch 27, 2014
Pros: being able to teach clients new things daily, being able to positively impact clients lives
Cons: unorganized management and pay, no chance of advancement
While working at ResCare a typical day for me would include getting clients off of their day program buses, unpacking their bags from the day and packing/preparing their lunches for the following day, passing out afternoon and evening meds, making dinner, kitchen/dishes cleanup, personal hygeine, housekeeping and laundry, and most of all being a companion – more... to the clients.
The management at ResCare was EXTREMELY unorganized and if you had a problem with payroll or had a question for the HR department they did not return your calls in a timely manner and sometimes would not return your calls at all. There were also a few times where my paychecks were not correct and I was shorted several hours. – less

Love the job, management and company sucks
DCP (Former Employee), Fort Wayne, INMarch 21, 2014
Pros: wonderful clients, laid-back job, enjoyable
Cons: not enough pay, management and chain of command sucks, very unorganized.
Loved the job, great experience, wonderful clients and co-workers. Most of the management aspects were not organized, the office staff are rude, and only care about how to get more money. The company as a whole does not care about the clients or workers. Employees are on a 'pay-freeze' which doesn't give much of anything to look forward to benefit wise. – more... The chain of command that we're supposed to use for any issues does absolutely nothing because there's so much drama and conflict between everyone. Such a hostile place to work. Good thing the clients make it worth while. – less

Love working with 1 on one with a individual that is Mentally Handicapped
DCP (Former Employee), Angola,IndianaMarch 21, 2014
Pros: working with indviduals who are handicapped
Cons: upper management
I worked Sat and Sunday from 8am-10 pm. Off during the week but i did pick up during the week so i can work around Dr's appts and etc.I arrive at work and make the ladies Breakfast then one of the ladies would do the am dishes and load the dishwasher themselves with minimal assist from staff. I would do the medications 1 by 1 to each lady. then they – more... would dress themselves and there own bathroom. took the ladies out to lunch or window shop so that got out of the house and do girl stuff with them. i cooked lunch and dinner but other staff would help as well.I would assist each lady with their goals such as when out in the community 1 client would order her own meal without a behavior and i would document that. What i learned with working with the Mentally Handicapped is Patience and that they are loving in their own way. Most Enjoyable part of the job is working with someone who is Handicapped and that we are all NOT perfect and seeing the smiles on their faces and being in their lives. – less

Direct Supportive Aide (Former Employee), Jeffersonville, INMarch 5, 2014
Pros: free time, possible outtings, and mileage reimburstment $.40/mile
Cons: too high of a turn over, no raises, and some unorganization due to short staffing
The company may mean well but I didn't experience much of it. Employees have a hard time enjoying the job of care taking due to the lack of skilled training and the workload does not match proper wages. As an employee you are practically a CNA doing most if not all the duties of a CNA without the proper education or license. Everything is suppose to – more... be learned in a week long training course and once you get out of class and start at a site, then you are observed by peers for mistakes and trained for corrections However "SOME" of the co-workers will train you to do things their way instead of what will benefit the client, some will follow policy. Management can change with the weather so it makes it difficult to follow orders due to the lack of communication from staff to management. Your days off aren't truly off unless you turn your phone off because someone always needs a shift covered. There was said to be some kind of "pay freeze" which is why most of the employees for Southern Indiana Rescare facilities haven't seen a raise. From speaking with many employees over my time of employment there, many said they have not ever had a raise. My overall experience with the company was disappointing, but I learned a lot about appreciating people of all types and knowing how capable I am . The idea of hiring people to take of someone is a great idea but there is a lot more to just hiring people and that's the hardest part of working for Rescare is not all seem to really care at all. I hope the company does improve for the betterment of the clients. – less

very well ran company
Residential Aide (Former Employee), London KyMarch 5, 2014
Pros: getting to help the individuals being a part of there achievments
Cons: long hours very demanding at times
A typical day on the job was waiting for individuals to return home form adult day training. I would do there paper work for the day and night, assist with what ever needed to be done for that night and the next day. give nightly medications out. Finish up the paper work and make sure they were in bed at a decent hour. Management worked well with you – more... if there was an issue that needed to be handled. The hardest part of the job was getting the individuals to understand that you were there to help them not order them around. I would have to say the most enjoyable part of the job is knowing that you are getting to be a part of there lives and being able to help them and see them start taking care of themselves with help and by reaching there daily goals. – less

Taking care of the clients and making sure they live in a safe environment. The most enjoyable part about the job was being able to help others. The hardest part was being able to meet the needs of all the consumers in the house.

ResCare has provided opportunities for learning new duties
Therapeutic Consultant/Clinical Supervisor (Current Employee), Martinsburg, WVMarch 3, 2014
I returned to Human Service work in 2009, and have accepted increasingly complex duties and responsibilities including at ResCare. Although initially hired as a part-time Service Coordinator my duties shifted during the first year to primarily Therapeutic Consultant work. Last July I was asked to assume the role of Clinical Supervisor in addition to – more... my duties as Therapeutic Consultant for the Medicaid Waiver/ISS clients in our area. Although in my area ResCare services are limited to Developmentally Disabled Adults, I believe my experience with them , combined with other management experience makes me well suited to leading a team of individuals providing services developmentally disabled adults, as well as children or even seniors. I would also like to add that I am free to relocate on short notice. – less

Clients are difficult to come by and when you find one you are usually thrown into the job without much training. they will also have you doing things that you are not certified to do. be careful!!! you can get into a lot of trouble if you arent sure what you are actually allowed to do.
