Director of Communications and Outreach
Provide innovative design and project management in the creation of high impact communications products that inspire people and build affiliation with the mission of RCSN: to help NYC parents of children with special needs learn to champion their children.
Lead and/or assist in the production of RCSN’s communications design and marketing projects, including presentations, media productions, ads, flyers/pdfs, email campaigns and emailed newsletters, videos, and other special projects.
Support the creation of high quality and on-brand design projects for the organization’s operational areas, and act as a design facilitator and hub for RCSN’s partnership organizations (includes internal and external brand stewardship).
Supervise photo and video shoots, and be a resource to media and other storytellers working to find the people, pictures, and sounds that tell our story.
With the Director of Communications, Develop a design project management timeline and work flow system to ensure on-time and on-budget completion of the organization’s communications products.
This position is directly responsible for the design and creation of communications products.
Bachelor's degree in Design, Arts/Fine Arts, or related field.
Two or more years’ professional experience in the creation of communications design projects. Relevant experience for this role may include design or creative services for non-profit or for-profit agencies.
Understanding of traditional communications design practices, including user knowledge of digital/graphic design, printing, and video editing software.
Experience with or willingness to learn Final Cut Pro is essential.
Good communications skills, including writing skills, are vital for this role; specifically the ability to edit copy and recognize the value of great copy and how it informs great design—and vice versa.
A heart. If you don't like kids, don't have kids, or don't care about kids, it's tough to work on behalf of kids. Experience in/knowledge of the world of special education/children with disabilities is highly preferred.
A sense of humor.
A passion for communications design and creative project management.
Strong sense of aesthetic judgment and design intuition for a wide range of projects.
Data-driven attitude: a willingness to stay on top of data, insistence on subjecting one's own approaches and activities to rigorous analysis, and a willingness to stop doing what is proven to be ineffective.
Knowledge of education, and/or special education, would be helpful.
RCSN teaches parents how to advocate for their children with special needs in NYC, and helps youth and young adults develop self-advocacy skills.
