Assistant Director and Principal, Newburyport, MA - August 6, 2013
A typical day began at 7:45 and ended at 6:00 p. m. I learned the Massachusetts Charter Law, having participated in two renewals of the charter. The school was two years old when I joined it. I had responsibilities for oversight and compliance for many aspects of the legal requirements of charter schools, including the relationship with the school's attorney. My position provided the opportunity to be active in city organizations and to develop service learning for our students. Co-workers became friends and remain so. The hardest part was also the best part: all the complex moving parts of an organization that is continuously in transition. I enjoyed working with Middle School students to build a Bank Dory in the oldest continuously active boat building facility in the USA. A side benefit was being able to help form a women's rowing group with the wooden boats. We rowed on the Merrimack River, past Plum Island to the Parker River in Ipswich. Beautiful!
