The Department of Economic Development has launched a new Existing Business Program to serve the needs of Roanoke County's business community. Based on the Virginia Department of Business Assistance (VDBA) projection that 75% of the new growth in the Commonwealth is directly attributed to the existing business community, the Department seeks to provide – more... opportunities for existing businesses to expand and operate successfully in the County. The program is focused on providing assistance to and increasing communication with its business membership. The creation of a formal Existing Business Program has been evolving since April, beginning with a survey that was distributed to 5,619 County businesses soliciting their input on a new program design.
The goal of the Existing Business Program is to enhance communication, to facilitate access to resources and related services, and to remain an interactive partner with the business community. In order to accomplish these objectives, the Existing Business Program has instituted three distinctive efforts to increase two-way communication with the business community:
Creation of a new RVTV-Channel 3 television program entitled "Roanoke County Business Partners" which is filmed every quarter and features businesses that have received certifications, hired new employees, undergone building or equipment expansions, or celebrated significant achievements. Each program features 4-5 segments, which profile the individual business. Recognizing individual businesses for achievements with a Resolution from the Board of Supervisors and a formal presentation at the Board of Supervisors' meeting, which is broadcast, on the government access channel. Development of the Roanoke County Business Partners' e-Newsletter. This communication tool highlights new information on County businesses on a six to eight week schedule and links the reader to the economic development website for more in-depth articles, photos, and business updates.
The Existing Business Program also includes numerous outreach initiatives to serve and assist our business partners such as:
Regular visits to County businesses on a rotation schedule or by request.
Expediting business concerns on issues such as permitting, expansions, regulations, and zoning.
Presentation of Certificates of Appreciation to businesses locating in Roanoke County and orientation to becoming part of the Existing Business community.
Involvement in state and regional support agencies such as the Roanoke Valley Economic Development Partnership, the New Century Venture Center, the Virginia Department of Business Assistance, the Roanoke Regional Small Business Development Center, and the Western Virginia Workforce Development Board, to provide better information and referrals to our businesses seeking assistance.
